Summary
August, 1944-- European Theatre
112th Infantry Regimental Combat Team, AKA the “Bloody Bucket” DivisionIt is a little-known fact that, in war, there exist three sides: the attackers, the defenders, and the environment itself. Humans can be swayed by their emotions, but the Earth feels nothing for those waging war on her surface. The battlefield does not care who you are-- it swallows the faithful and the damned alike.
Dennis Whitaker still believes in saving people.
Colonel Robby knows better.Between the dying and the dead, prayers and exhaustion, and hands that refuse to stop reaching-- something fragile takes root.
But in a war that devours everything in its path, even hope can feel like a sin.
or
Dennis Whitaker never intended to enlist, as a medic or as a soldier. Now that he's here, though, he's going to save as many lives as possible, or die trying.

Summary
Being an R2 is great. Dennis is a real doctor, with an amazing boyfriend, and the best coworkers ever who have become family. The ER is still chaotic, and the days are long, and people manage to injure themselves in more creative ways than he ever could have imagined, but he finally feels like he's got his feet under him. Until the ER gods decide to remind him that "not much surprises me anymore" is a challenge on par with using the Q word on a full moon.
Or, a venomous snake is loose in the emergency room. Of course, this is Dennis's problem.

Summary
“I know it sounds ridiculous,” Arthur says. “But I can’t stop thinking about him, Guinevere. It’s like I can feel him. His heart right here.”
He lays his palm over his chest and holds it there. On an impulse, Gwen joins him. Arthur lets his hand fall so that hers can spread out over the thin layer of linen over his skin, and that’s when she feels it.
Arthur’s heart beats in the usual rhythm, but there is a flutter there, too.
No, not just a flutter, a full beat between the others and behind it.
Arthur lifts his face to hers, and Gwen has never been more thankful that he cannot see the horror spreading rapidly across her own.
(To prevent Arthur's death at the Battle of Camlann, Merlin makes a magical exchange - he gives Arthur his heart in exchange for Arthur's sight. Arthur makes it home, but Merlin doesn't, so Gwen sets out to find him and bring him home, only to discover that Merlin isn't exactly the person she thought him to be.)

Summary
Merlin’s skin is still cool to the touch, colder now, from the rain. Arthur swallows and wishes he had something to lay over him. The maids covered him in a blanket last year during the snow. Before that, the flakes piled up in the corners of his eye and the top edge of his tilted lips.
“He’ll be but three-and-twenty when we’re just about to die,” Gwaine says, looking down at his friend.
“He’ll be three-and-twenty for the next thousand years,” Arthur sighs.
He stands and smooths the wrinkles out of his tunic and trousers.
“We’ll be back for you, Merlin. Sleep well,” he says.
