Eddie kissed him again, softer and wetter, running his tongue over the seam of Evan’s lips. Evan melted. When Eddie spoke again, he melted even further, practically a puddle at his feet. “I like you. And maybe this is just all in my head and you’re thinking I’m an absolute freak and can’t wait to get out of here but—”
“But maybe I like you, too,” Evan interjected.
Eddie smiled. Radiant. “Yeah?”

Summary
Before Eddie can think of any more excuses, Buck bursts back through the surface of the water with Eddie’s body in his arms.
Eddie looks down at himself, still kneeling on the dock, and then at what is unmistakably also him in the water. Buck sucks in a great gasp of air, but the Eddie in the water doesn’t. His head slumps limp onto Buck’s shoulder, and the puzzle pieces of the last few minutes suddenly fall into place.
Finding himself back on the dock with no memory of how he got there. Buck unable to see or hear him. Eddie’s hand passing right through him.
Oh. He didn’t make it out of the water. He drowned.

“Yeah,” she says bluntly. “If you wanna talk to someone so badly, the department has a shrink on tap. Talk to your family, or—try a priest. Jeez, Eddie, a comatose guy?”

Or, Eddie hides out in the hospital room of a coma patient to get away from his aunt’s meddling, and Buck tries to follow the voice from his dreams.
