A year contains 365 days. Each day can be counted in 24 candle marks, so it's possible to burn 8760 marks in the span of the one year Merlin has been dead. Not a single one of them lessen the mournful air that envelops Camelot, and Arthur thinks it will take four times as many before anyone who has known the blue-eyed man with too large ears and too big of a heart can smile and mean it.

He whipped his head back to Merlin so fast his neck burned, watching as the boy’s eyes faded from shimmering gold, one hand extended in the air.
The world seemed to slow, shock and anger reverberating through Arthur’s core. He could do nothing but stare, and Merlin stared back, fear, guilt, and something unreadable in his expression.
Then, there was a whizzing cut through the air, one that left Arthur’s ears ringing. He watched – helpless, the anger punched out of him – as the arrow buried itself in Merlin’s side.

Summary
Of all the ways Arthur and the knights could've found out about his magic, Merlin hadn't thought it'd be due to a sparrow. There will be a happy ending, but it's gonna take a while.
"Arthur was terrified when he saw Merlin make up his mind to jump. He put on a burst of speed, willing his body to give everything he had so he could just-reach out and….He crashed at full speed into the warlock, knocking them both out of breath, but most importantly, far away from the edge of the ravine. Merlin fought him, kicking and clawing for escape, but it was clear that whatever had fueled him for so long was gone, and eventually the kicking and punching and shouting was gone, and Merlin wept in Arthur’s arms, trembling hard.
“Sorry, so sorry, so so sorry. ‘M so sorry, Arthur,” he sobbed desperately, and Arthur held him close, heart racing and eyes wet. “I’m so sorry, please don’t burn me. I’m so sorry. I didn’ mean to, I was born with it.” Merlin cried, and Arthur shushed him gently."

Arthur, Merlin and the knights are hunting the bandits who have been terrorising the outskirts of the land when the mission takes a bad turn. Merlin gets hurt, and then Merlin gets sick. They need to get back to Camelot, to Gaius, now. But Merlin gets separated from the group and is left to fend for himself. Meanwhile Arthur is going out of his mind trying to find his way back to Merlin. Merlin who may or may not be dead by then.

The world is deaf when he speaks and begs and cries, the world doesn’t stop when he takes a break; When he is deaf the world send riddles and people to frustrate him, the world continues wherever or whoever he is or choses to be - whether the chores are never done, whether he feels defeated, whether he gets to have fun - Life is never completed.
When the balance of earth is repaired at one end of the coin - Magic, it collapses on the other - Courage.
The tear ducts keep breaking loose, the secrecy won’t end, there are cracks in the foundation of his life, and the repairs of one’s chainmail - one can't keep everything in mind.
