Ever since their encounter in the spring, it feels as if Wei Ying is around him even more often than before, tormenting him with a constant barrage of inappropriate outbursts ("Lan Zhan! Look at that mountain ridge, it's shaped like boobs!"), preposterous ideas ("Hey, Lan Zhan, what if we just turn it into a monster first? That would be way better practice, even Huaisang could take this thing…"), and impertinent questions that should by all rights be in violation of any rules anywhere (“Lan Zhan, do you think you’ll always want to live in the Cloud Recesses? What if the girl you want to marry doesn’t like all the rules?”) as though Lan Wangji has in any way invited his scrutiny.
Everything about this trip is terrible.
On the worst field trip known to the cultivation world (and Lan Wangji specifically), a bit of extracurricular study takes an unexpected turn.

“Aha!” Wei Ying shouted. “So it is an early twenties rebellion thing.”
Lan Zhan glanced at him with a heavy gaze that Wei Ying couldn’t parse. The last thing he said before remaining silent for the rest of their walk was, “Amongst other things.”

It hadn’t even been a full week since Lan Wangji had visited the Burial Mounds. When he left, it felt like a final thing, like a goodbye, like closure.
Not like he’d come back in five days.
“Why are you here?” Wei Wuxian internally winced at his tone. Too unfriendly.
Lan Wangji didn’t seem outwardly injured. His robes were pristine, unnervingly white among all that dirt. His hairstyle was different, though, more mature.
Now that Wei Wuxian caught onto that detail, it looked a bit like Lan Wangji had aged.

“Excuse me. Where can I find the wheatgrass?”
“End cap, row four -- ” Wei Ying started to answer. And then he saw him. Standing there in his flowy white tunic and his pale blue linen pants, as if that was a thing that people did. Who did that? Was it legal to do that? Wei Ying thought not.
“Thank you,” Wheatgrass Guy had said, his startlingly light eyes boring into him.
“No problem,” Wei Ying had managed. “Let me know if you need help with bananas.”
Wei Ying should not be allowed to speak. Who had entrusted him with words?
“I will let you know if I need any help,” Wheatgrass Guy had said graciously, and Wei Ying thought that this guy was too good, too amazing, too kind, letting it slide like that -- “with bananas.”
