I put up a finger. “First of all, Rocky doesn’t share a head with me. He has his own head. It’s just that he’s always butting into mine.”

“Love you too, buddy.”
“Aww, you guys are so cute.” Ilyukhina rolls onto her stomach. “Hey Rocky, did you know that Grace once accidentally called Stratt ‘mom’?”
(Grace introduces Rocky to Ilyukhina. Too late, he realizes this was a mistake.)

As soon as the pictures came in from the Venus probe, Eva Stratt got to work. She spoke with every reputable xenobiologist she could find. Every one of them pointed to Dr Ryland Grace. All of them told her, in varying degrees of politeness, that he was a little… unhinged.

Summary
All I know about Stratt is that I work for her, Carl works for her, she’s brought me to a Chinese aircraft carrier without warning, and - like she told me right at the beginning - she’s “with the Petrova Taskforce”. That means she can’t be too high up on the chain of command, since she has enough power to snatch up middle school teachers from their normal lives but not much else. After all, if she had the power to get anyone in the world, why would she want me?
Well. I guess that means I’m unlucky enough to be living here, at least until her boss shows up and asks why the heck I’m still around.
(Or: 5 times Grace didn't know Stratt was the director of the Petrova Taskforce + 1 time he figured it out.)

“I’m coming!” Colt shouts out, swinging himself out of his bed. He reaches for a shirt that’s been tossed onto his floor, tugging it over his head to appear at least somewhat presentable to whoever was at the door at— he turns to check his alarm— 5:02 AM. Christ. Whatever was going on had to be important, otherwise he was going right back to bed.
His eyes are still adjusting to the light by the time he reaches the door, and the relentless knocking hasn’t ceased. Colt yanks the door open, ready to lecture whoever the hell was here so early, when he… stops. Because whatever he’d been expecting— it wasn’t this.
His brother stood outside, fist raised in preparation to knock again. His glasses were askew and he was dressed for work, his school lanyard still hanging around his neck, though his clothes were far more wrinkled and crumpled than usual.
In short, he looked like shit.
