“You are sick,” Ilya said slowly, enunciating every word. He sprayed another stream of water into his mouth, and Shane couldn’t help but stare at the way his throat moved. He felt hypnotized, trapped in Ilya’s stare, and the other man put the bottle down. “Have you scene before, Shane Hollander?”
Shane’s expression crumpled before he could wrestle it back under control. He cleared his throat, his stomach cramping uncomfortably. “Have I what? Have--scened with someone? What do you mean?”
“You are sub,” Ilya spoke with the water bottle waving, his voice casual. He ignored Shane’s defensive posture, gesturing to the trash can. “Sub get sick when not scene. When no Dom to scene with,” Ilya trailed off, looking Shane up and down, lingering on his collarless throat before continuing. “Is…unhealthy.”
In a world where subs, Doms, and Switches are biologically determined, subs are not accepted within a Dom-oriented sport like hockey.

“My parents,” Steve explained softly, his fingers curling into Eddie’s shirt, “They’ve arranged my mating.”
Eddie felt his heart stop, his fingers tightening ever so slightly on the back of Steve’s neck, “Please, tell me you’re joking,” he begs.
Steve whimpered in response, causing Eddie’s heart to break, the pieces managing to find their way into his throat, trying to suffocate him. He brought Steve’s head towards his chest, allowing the omega to bury himself in his scent.
“I managed to convince them to let me have one more night with you,” Steve softly whispers, tilting his head up to look at Eddie. With tears in his eyes, he begins to speak again, “So please, alpha, make it worth my while.”

"No," Steve replied. Embarrassment at his lack of knowledge forced him to add a quick but sincere: "I'm sorry."
The stranger flicked his helmet's visor up and Steve bit hard at the inside of his lip for entirely different reasons. There was something about the man's eyes. Something about the way they flashed like steel in the murky light that pulled Steve closer to the window before he'd even noticed he was moving.

Summary
Steve barely survived imprisonment, torture, and the Battle of Starcourt. He was left with too many slowly healing injuries, including one to his brain. He hated having to be babied and cared for while he recovered from his concussion. It might be the brain damage speaking, but a lot of the symptoms don’t make any sense to him. What does an increased risk of impulsivity even mean? On top of all that, the more he talks to Robin, the more he starts to question his sexuality.
He gets a crash course in the complications and side effects of a concussion when he’s down to his last hundred dollars and desperate to figure himself out. He goes to Eddie Munson’s trailer, hoping to score some weed and seduce the possibly gay drug dealer, but concussions are a real bitch, and instead, he ends up paying Eddie all of his remaining money to give the guy a blowjob.
That one moment of misunderstanding and poor impulse control starts a year-long back-and-forth between the two men; as Steve comes to understand his sexuality, Eddie comes to realize his worth, and they learn what it means to get what they want.

“What’s up, buttercup?” Eddie asks, wandering into the kitchen, pencil stuck at the top of his pony tail and red ink smeared on the side of his hand.
“I’m early.” Steve grumbles, not bothering to sound anything other than dejected, stabbing an accusatory finger at the calendar. “I’m gonna miss Erica’s volleyball game.”

Steve ignores the cat, at first.
He’s digging a thumbnail into the meat of his palm, shuffling from foot to foot every so often, dragging a lip so hard between his teeth that Eddie’s worried he’s gonna make it bleed, and Eddie isn’t sure what to do. He wants to help, wants to somehow soothe the boy, but he isn’t sure how, thinks if he gets any closer to him he’ll only make things worse.
The cats meows again. Presses itself harder up against Steve, stretches up so its little front paws are against his thigh, kneading insistently, refusing to be ignored.
Steve sags a little. Reaches down with a trembling hand, strokes it across the cat’s head, and Eddie can hear the rumbling purr start up from the little creature. He watches as Steve loosens up, as his fingers unclench and his teeth release his lip and the frown fades slowly from his lovely face.

Eddie's reluctantly helping Wayne with his produce stall at the farmers' market. He's resigned himself to a boring summer - until a new face shows up at the market to run a baking stall with his best friend. Steve is...odd, like no one Eddie's ever met.
