Peña picks him up from the airport in a beat-up pickup truck that Steve fears will fall apart at the first pothole they encounter—it doesn't. That piece of shit car survives every single hole in the road on their way to Peña’s family farm. The car smells strongly like horse shit, and it takes Steve a while to realize the car isn’t the problem; the problem is Peña, who somehow no longer smells like his trademark cologne-sweat-and-cigarette-mix, but like he’s spent the day rolling around in dirt and hay.
After Colombia, Steve Murphy visits Javier Peña in Texas. He realizes little stays as it was when time gets its chance to play with it. He also quickly realizes that—despite months of having lived through a drug war together—he actually doesn't know shit about Peña.
