Summary
Jack knows logically that ACL tears are common enough that his surgeon will have done this procedure dozens, if not hundreds of times, but—
—but something can always go wrong. Most people in Jack’s situation will recover completely and without incident, but most is not the same as all. Nothing is sure. No one can make promises. He’s had eighteen months in the NHL and no power in the world can guarantee him any more.
The plane flies over Lake Ontario. Somewhere thousands of feet below him, the Maple Leafs are preparing to take on the Capitals. His own team is thousands of miles behind him, flying south to California to play the Kings.
Jack tips his head back against the seat and cries.

Summary
Eric has a sudden vivid memory of his own childhood room, the one he had before they moved to Madison. Mama had decorated it, of course, but she’d done it with Coach in mind, with an eye toward the sort of father-son bonding that seemed to come naturally to all his cousins and classmates. There’d been a football-patterned wallpaper border and a gridiron rug that scratched under Eric’s bare feet when he got out of bed every morning. And every night he’d fallen asleep under a duvet printed with cartoon football players, running and making passes and tackling without fainting once. The night after his first disastrous peewee practice he’d pushed the comforter to the floor, not sure he could look at it without crying, and blamed the unseasonably warm night when Mama asked him about it the next morning.

Summary
“Jack turns in a slow, aimless circle in the middle of his living room. Blank white walls. Bare floor. A sofa, a TV, a coffee table: just the basics, really. Well, no wonder it doesn’t look like home; he can’t blame his apartment’s sudden coldness and its empty echoing spaces solely on the absence of one Eric R. Bittle. It just… doesn’t look like anyone lives here. It doesn’t feel like anyone lives here. He has no idea how to change that.”
(Or… Jack comes home from Madison to an apartment that doesn’t smell like cinnamon, and teammates who don’t know what he means he says ‘swawesome. It feels like it should be easier, turning the place he lives into a home and the people he plays hockey with into teammates. But even ‘easy’ things have always felt harder than they should.)

Summary
Holster comes back to himself with a start. “Sorry. Just thinking, I dunno.” Birds circle above the water; he tracks their progress to avoid looking at Ransom’s stupid salmon shorts and stupid Samwell croakies and stupid perfect face. “Everything’s weird,” he adds softly, still not trusting himself to look at Ransom.
“Weird as fuck,” Ransom says, and then he leans his head against Holster’s shoulder, short-buzzed hair scratchy against his bare skin.

Summary
Eventually Jack came back to himself, as he always did, shaky and exhausted but alive, and Shitty wrapped up his rambling story. “Anyway, man, that’s why if you ever have kids you shouldn’t make bets with your hedge fund buddies on their names. You’ll end up with a son named Barnaby Sylvester Knight, and trust me, that is no way to start a father-son relationship.”
“That’s a pretty awful name,” Jack whispered. “Thanks, man.”
Shitty just squeezed him tighter and didn’t protest at all when Jack finally drifted off, drooling a little on his pillow.

Summary
When Jack comes back out ten minutes later, towel around his waist, his phone is blinking with a new notification--one new Snapchat from bitty15. Still holding onto his towel, he opens the app, expecting a ten-second kitchen panorama, or possibly another picture of Chowder, sleeping on the green couch and wearing a clipart flower crown.
The photo Bitty’s sent is nothing of the sort.
Jack and Bitty have some fun despite the distance.
