Obediently, John did so. He didn’t know what he’d been expecting, but, whatever it was, it wasn’t something light and somewhat soft being slipped over his wrist. A few adjustments later the mystery item was snug against his skin, not too tight and not too loose.
"There. How does it feel?”
John reached over to tap his reply. What, exactly, is ‘it’?
Noel laughed, the sound rumbling off the walls. “A bracelet.”

The sun was gliding lower, twilight mingling on the scraps of horizon barely peeking through the gaps between offices and department stores and whatever other shiny new buildings had sprouted up like so many daisies.
Noel found he quite enjoyed this time of day when the cars were scarcer and the foot traffic thinned. Yes, even those scraps of sky as they turned a deep amber, then royal blue, then dusky purple. His insomnia may have been a bitch, but at least, on some nights, it dressed itself up as something near-comforting.
Some nights.

There were claws against his stomach, pressing deep enough to break through the armor he wore to meet skin and dragging. He thought he screamed, but the pain that blackened his vision made it hard to tell. There was yelling somewhere around him, and the sound of running feet before the weight on top of him was suddenly lifted.

Viking went weak with relief. He collapsed back on his heels, shoving wet hair back out of his face. "Oh, thank god. Apo. Do you not know how to swim?"
Apo scowled and mustered the strength to slug him in the shoulder. She was weak as a kitten, but he took it as a good sign. "No, you jerk," she said, and wrapped her arms around herself. "Next time I'm staying home. You can keep your stupid gummy worms."
He wheezed a laugh, strained and pathetic. "You can have all the gummy worms you want," he said. "As long as you don't die in a lake."

This is the first time in a long long while that I feel normal again; Jake decided to himself.It wasn't completely true, and he knew that. He doesn't actually remember when things went from him always being in danger because of something unnatural and unexplainable—unless you've seen as much as people in his line of work see—happening to him being able to go out and buy this week's groceries without needing to think about anything else but how much of every item he has. His life has been slowly shifting to something calmer without him even noticing.
OR a while after getting out of the hospital, Jake reflects on the whole "blackrabbit situation". It starts with a lot of nightmares and spiraling and ends with him calling a friend.
