Badeni had only himself to blame for this predicament. If he’d never flipped open the cover of Oczy’s book, driven by incredulous curiosity, if he’d never skimmed that first page, and then read it again and again, increasingly unbalanced by the spread of sincere words in an awkward hand, he would never have known what was churning away in that inexplicable man’s head. He’d never have known just how much their meeting had meant.

It takes a while to find him again, but when they reunite, Zack doesn't know if they'll ever get back to the relationship they had before Shinra trapped them in that basement all those years ago. It doesn't help that there's not a lot of time for healing when Sephiroth is trying to end the world.

His body was heavy, drowsy, as if he had slept for far too long. How long was he asleep for? He could barely feel the hard pelt of rain on his skin as he wiggled his fingers, and then his toes. He couldn’t even see past the blurriness that seemed to be a permanent part of his eyesight.
