Grace lives a long and happy life on Erid with his cluster-members Rocky and Adrian, until he passes at the age of 95. He wakes up to find himself back in his San Francisco apartment and has to face navigating the most difficult part of his life in a language he hasn't spoken in 60 years.
OR; After finding himself in the past, Ryland Grace has to try his best to keep his head down and figure out what he wants to do with his second try at solving the Astrophage problem and returning to his family. He struggles with language barriers, culture shock, and worst of all: he never really recovered all of his memories from his first time on earth.

“Adrian, just a small warning: the Rocky that came back might not be the Rocky you know. It’s classified, but my friend is one of the comms specialist on the space elevator. They told me things. He acts… weird. He doesn’t sleep, and neglects the medical and psychological exams. I’m not sure he’s here, if you know what I mean."
“Where is he, then?” Adrian’s musical notes come out discordant.
“Wherever his human companion is stuck. If the alien dies, Rocky might never come down from the stars.”Or; twenty-three friends leave for the most dangerous mission known to Erid, two strangers return.

And that's the problem. Shouldn't Grace, y'know...age? When Rocky indicates that he should be sixty human years old by now, Grace can't reconcile the young face in the mirror with the time that his friend has religiously kept.
Things get more complicated when another undoubtedly human ship shows up at the edge of the 40 Eridani system. Suddenly Grace is playing ambassador between the two species, and tensions are rising between them. Will this be a successful second contact, or is the peaceful life Grace just wants to live too much to ask for?

Meanwhile, Eva and the Project Hail Mary team have been fighting a losing battle against the cooling sun—and their own demons—trying to make sure there were still people to be saved by the time the crew could send a solution home. Right on schedule, the beetles are returning to Earth, hopefully with the answer to saving the world. But Eva has something else to worry about; there’s every possibility Ryland Grace’s last words would be coming home, and all the time in the world couldn’t make her ready to face the consequences of her actions, or what will happen when her colleagues find out what she did to their friend.
