It started shortly after the Strawhats had left Wano, shortly after Smoker had read about their exploits in the newspaper, seen the new bounties, the new pictures.
A shock of white hair, a grin wide enough it barely fit on a human face, and Smoker could hear the laugh.Or: Logias have a little mind of their own too, it just doesn't show that often. Until it does and then everything is a hundred times more complicated.

Summary
When the going gets tough, sometimes all you can do is suck it up and plow on. Caz McLeary knew this well, as did his wife, Suze.
And that saying comes into play in bad ways, often. Like when Caz suddenly starts acting… off. Or when Suze is told that he’s dying, inside his head, tortured by everything that makes the good sides of him look outright angelic.
The miracle of the rainbow is that it really does bring out all the colors - even the dark ones. And in this case, it also brings out all of the bad memories, all of the trauma that was created in the middle of the North Sea, all those years ago.
If only Caz had a therapist whose care for his patients and friends outweigh his care for his own safety, and a loyal wife willing to go through hell and rising oil to keep him safe - and sane.

Summary
Smoker was a good Marine. He'd fought against pirates his whole life to protect civilians, defending what he believed was Justice.
Then he witnessed the Government permit slavery, something supposedly outlawed, and his world shifted as he realized the pristine white flag of the Marines hid some ugly blemishes.
He did what his instincts demanded, but he knew the consequences would reach him. So when one day, a Vice Admiral and a new Captain for Loguetown appeared with orders to execute him, he wasn't surprised.
Smoker was resigned to his fate until a kid in a straw hat fell near his cell. The kid was a pirate, and Smoker hated pirates, but-
"Pirates are people who are free! Who explore the world, chase their dreams, and follow their own path! And I'm going to become the Pirate King, the freest person in the sea!"
And Smoker felt his world shift again. If the white flag of the Marines hid blemishes... Maybe there were a few clean spots in the pitch black flag of the Pirates?

Or: Luffy kidnaps Smoker from his own execution, and Smoker is forced to join the Strawhats.
...He still isn't sure if it's the best or worst decision of his life.

“Hey mom, I think I found something.” Susan stood up, pushing her glasses up into her hair. Max reached in the space left by the absent drawer, tugging the folder free. She straightened up, eyes wide as she read the neat handwriting on the small tab that jutted out further beyond the papers that were stuffed in it.
William.
“Who’s William…?” Max handed the file off, following her Mother over to that old armchair. Susan sat down, crossing her legs and quickly flicking the file open. Her glasses perched back on her nose as she scanned the first few documents. “Mom? Does Neil have like, another kid or something?” Susan shook her head, flipping a page over and reading the next.
“Well, this changes things.”
