Summary
Thirty-something Nick and Charlie meet as trainee therapists at a psychology practice, and sparks fly immediately. Nick spent his life in an environment where he could never fully be himself, so he suppresses his emotions and shuns vulnerability like a pro. He still has a lot to learn, but he’s sincere and determined – if a little terrified – and when he loves, he does so fiercely and unapologetically. Charlie’s been through a lot, but he’s quite far along in his healing journey after therapy. These days, he’s no longer avoidant (no, really) and swears by his tried-and-true radical honesty policy, alongside a rock-solid coping style grounded in gallows humour and rationalisation. Cue a slow-burn emotional romance with two people learning to love and be loved as they are, lots of personal growth, an unflinching look at the harrowing realities of trauma, and a focus on the gritty, quietly powerful work of recovery.

My axe was the first thing that belonged to me.
Everything we have – from the West boundary to the East – belongs to Papa, but this axe is mine.
I've replaced the handle twice in the past three years; the daily usage means that the wood wears away smooth in the shape of my palm until it becomes too brittle to survive the hard thwack of the head against the logs that are my job to chop. Each time I fix it, I carefully copy the letters of my name from the old wood to the new:

Summary
Nick Nelson had always been good at two things: Quidditch and talking his way out of trouble.
Unfortunately for him, Charlie Spring seemed immune to both.
As Gryffindor’s newly appointed Quidditch captain, Nick was enjoying the attention that came with winning matches, charming the hell out of students and teachers alike, and being generally adored by most of Hogwarts. Charlie, Slytherin’s painfully intense fifth-year prefect, was significantly less charmed by him.
Especially after catching Nick sneaking back into the castle drunk after curfew.

Charlie Spring is also a single father to a feisty little 9 year old girl named Ruby. Charlie and Ruby have been planning their Summer getaway to the beach for months and they're excited for a month of beaches and bonding.

Everything felt wrong but his heart eased up for the first time since he woke up in the middle of what he assumed was a park with a head injury and no memories. "Nick?" Elle puts her hand on his forearm, the warmth jolting him back to his body, but he's looking out of his eyes like they're windows. He blinks them into focus, glances at her. She's wearing golden earrings in the shape of doves, and they glitter in the sun. "Yeah?"
"Are you alright? I called your name like, five times?"
"I-"Are you alright?
He thinks so. He doesn't know what's wrong.
"S-sorry." He manages, after sitting there, struggling for words for a whole minute. "I must've blanked out." He smiles, but it takes effort he doesn't have, and his eyes feel too watery. Elle's hand squeezes, and then falls back to her side. "You can talk to me, you know that- right? Whatever's going on, we can talk."
He registers the offer like he registers wind, and breathing and waking up. Mundane grey. Nothing sticks out, and nothing is his own. He nods anyways.
