When Scott Hunter ventured out on his balcony after the 2011 All Star Game, he only wanted to get some air. He didn't expect to overhear a couple of rookies having sex. He definitely didn't anticipate hearing his own name. But when Hollander catches him eavesdropping, Scott does the upstanding thing and offers his phone number in case the younger men ever have questions about being closeted hockey players. "There in the photo was a young man in a hammock with a serene lake behind him, bathed in an orange sunset. A book was open in his lap and he was smiling up at the camera, easy and relaxed. Ilya didn’t think he’d ever seen anyone look so effortlessly gorgeous in a pair of ratty sweatpants and a bleach-stained t-shirt. He also didn’t think he’d ever find a personal family photo of Shane Hollander, the up-and-coming hockey sensation from Canada who had gone missing in November of 2008, in a thrift shop in Boston."
Ilya and Shane never met at world juniors because Shane vanished without a trace. Against all logic, he appears almost two years later in Ilya's dreams. Those dreams begin to blur the line between fiction and reality, becoming muddy and impossible to navigate. As Ilya falls in love with a dead man, he finds that he cares less and less about those lines. When the opportunity to solve the mystery and bring closure to Shane's parents presents itself, Ilya must face whatever reality may truly be, even if that means losing the love of his life for good.

“Eyes on me.” There is a sharp satisfaction as those eyes lift immediately to meet his again. “I need your name.”
The man’s lashes flutter. “Shane, sir.”
Ilya nods and lets his hand move through Shane’s hair. It is soft, and Shane leans into the touch, eyes closing briefly as if the contact alone is enough to ground him. The response is so natural that it gives Ilya pause.
“Tell me about your limits.” Ilya doubts he is going to be close to any limits tonight, as Shane looks like he already had a pretty rough night. But he still needs to ask, good hygiene.
A small smile appears on Shane’s face, he looks at Ilya deeply, eyes not wandering away as he speaks, “There are no limit, sir.” He looks at the disbelief appearing on Ilya’s face and offers, “I’m the house slave.”
Or, Ilya didn’t come for attachment, but Shane, bruised, obedient, and unraveling, becomes the one thing he can’t leave broken.
