Sasuke kept every letter Naruto sent to him, each one carefully folded and sealed away, as if he would one day reread them and hold them tightly to himself and inhale the scent of what could have been home.
Obito burned every letter Kakashi sent to him, each one fed to the flames of campfires made in the night, as if littering the ground with their ashes somehow severed the bond that had formed over twenty years ago.
Neither of them really knew how to let go.
In the end, they had each other.

He didn't know what to say when presented with an option rather than an apology. He wanted someone to listen as silence poured from the deepest parts of him. He wanted someone to lie to him, to tell him that they had somehow achieved world peace with an armistice forced into existence after a successful winter push into the Land of Earth. He wanted a vast selection of the impossible, so there was nothing Kakashi could say or do.

It would be best if you,” Fugaku paused, looking down at the wooden table with such an intensity that Itachi almost began to doubt the things he’d overhead, “if you found alternate living arrangements. There will be no further contact with my family.”
