Looking back now, it was strange, the decisions you made in the first hour of your freedom. You hid yourself in the Avenger’s car when Agent Romanov left her Russian family to save her American one. Why? When you and Natasha told this story, you always said it was because you needed to know if you were a better agent than Red over here. But if you were to be honest, really, it was just because you saw the Black Widow’s face cycling through softness and guilt and regret and pain and - most of all - kindness, while she was addressing you and the other freed Widows, and you believed that if you followed the Avenger, maybe you, too, would discover that you also had a soul, despite having lived for twenty-five years with the humanity systematically removed from you.
