Summary
“It’s not Lightning, by the way” the kid nearly whispers, picking at the frayed hem on the ankle of his sweatpants.
Doc turns to look at him fully, “What’s not?”
“My name.” He doesn’t make eye contact, refuses to even let Doc try to catch his blue eyes, “Harv had me change it when I started racin’ with him.”
Doc knew Lightning probably wasn’t the kid’s god given name. He’d been around racing long enough to know the different monikers often helped give the racer a break from being the racer when they wanted a second away from it all. He hadn’t known Lightning to share that desire. Lightning McQueen was written in all the court documents from their first meeting, on every check the kid signed to revitalize the town, even the kid’s credit card held the moniker. He’d assumed somewhere along the line, the kid had changed whatever his birth name was to his chosen name. Never really felt the need to question it.
“It’s Montgomery.” Lightning whispered.
Or; Lightning may have bitten off more than he can chew with his new found fame. He thought he was ready to be THE Lightning McQueen, but will he ever not be Montgomery?

I mostly skimmed, but a few scenes caught my attention:
This time when Mater speaks, in the quiet that had settled over the pits, everyone can hear him.
“Are your family here, Lightning?” he asks, in the same exuberant voice he always used.
It’s an innocent enough question, but Doc wants to facepalm, because he knows Mater would never have asked it if he had seen the expression Lightning had been wearing while watching the Weathers’ exchange. But now he’s put the kid on the spot, and everyone on Team McQueen is waiting for an answer, and even some members of Hicks’ team next door have turned.
“Ah, well …” Lightning suddenly looks uncomfortable, his eyes snapping from the screen, and his hands come up to fiddle with the collar of his tracksuit - a nervous habit. “No, they’re not. They’re, uh.”
….
“I don’t know them.”
They wait, but when he doesn’t expand, simply looking down and pulling on the cuffs of his sleeves like a child who’s been caught at doing something they shouldn’t, Luigi hesitantly asks, “You … never met them?”
Lightning shakes his head minutely, still not looking up. “I grew up in the system.”
Doc feels like all the breath’s been knocked out of him.
“So yeah, I’m an orphan– well,” Lightning chuckles lightly, “that’s not true, I don’t think. My parents might still be out there. They gave me up. Maybe they just didn’t want me. I dunno.”
A couple cars speed past them, and Lightning finally looks up – Doc sees his cheeks are flushed slightly – to glance at the large clock that shows 24 minutes until the race begins.* an interesting point, where celebrities rip off the labelling of bottles to prevent favouritism + lightning pouring water over his head
He watches one of the kid’s sponsors – Rusty or Dusty, Doc has truthfully never spoken to either of them at length – press a water bottle into Lightning’s hand, and he rips off the label on autopilot, not to be caught drinking from something that doesn’t sponsor him with cameras shooting him from all angles. He tilts his head back and pours half of the water over his face, drenching his hair, before waterfalling the rest into his mouth, although most of the liquid seems to spill down his chin and the front of his suit. He shakes his head wildly like a dog to flick the droplets from his hair, leaving him with an artfully ruffled look, strands spiky and falling into his eyes.
(Doc suspects that clips of him with water cascading down his face will soon find their way into the more adulating corners of the internet, to be re-edited and slowed down and obsessed over; although McQueen isn’t the youngest racer on the grid by a margin of more than a couple years, a 19-year-old is still more appealing to teenage fans than a man in his early 20s, and a boy with a smart mouth and devil-may-care attitude even moreso.).

"Hi, Sheriff... fancy seeing you here," Lightning said and smiled sheepishly. Stay cool. Stay cool. "Beautiful weather today, isn't it?"
Sheriff huffed. "Save it, hot shot. You're in a heap of trouble. Where did you get that car anyway?"
Or: Lightning gets pulled over by Sheriff for speeding. Sheriff is not happy to see that it’s Lightning behind the wheel. And even if the boy tries hard he can’t get around the consequences. And all that with his new sports car which he got today.

He held out his hand demandingly and Lightning gave him his papers that he got from the car.
The Rust-eze racer sighed and rubbed his forehead. "I imagined my arrival differently. I didn't even make it home." Desperately he gestured with his hand in direction of home.
Sheriff put a hand on Lightning's shoulder. "You know I'm not doing this to ruin your day, right?" he said softly.
"Yeah I know," he said sheepishly and looked at the ground.
"Hey kid, listen, I know you have potential and are a good... an impressive racer. But please leave your talent on the racetrack or at least where it's allowed to drive faster. Will you do me the favor?" Sheriff nodded encouragingly to him.
The kid had grown very close to his heart just like the others from the small town loved the kid. Doc was his best friend. That was his best friend's kid. So kind of like his nephew. And it was hard for him, even though he couldn't admit it, to burden his nephew with the consequences.
Lightning smiled a little bit. "I'll try."
"One step in the right direction. Still, you have to face the consequences."
"I know. Like what?"
"You're going to jail until Doc comes back."
"Jail?! Seriously?" Lightning shook his head in shock. That was the last thing he needed.
"I said until Doc comes back. Shouldn't be more than an hour. And then I'll talk to him."
Sighing, Lightning gave up. "Fine. So I guess I'll ride with you in the patrol car?"
Sheriff thought for a moment. "You know... your new car shouldn't be left alone here for too long. If you promise not to run away, you can drive it into town and then come to me. Good?"
"Yeah good. Thanks. I promise."

Summary
Lightning Mcqueen was at the top of the world. Racing against friends and new racers was an amazing feeling. Everything was great until a new racer show up. His name? Jackson Storm. After he show up, everything in the racing sport started to change. Racers, teams, sponsors and the public.
((So I saw a pic about Storm and then I discover fanfics about Storm and Lightning and totally ship them. Sadly there isn't many fanfics of this two so I'm making one myself. This fanfic take place at the beginning of Cars 3 since I think the movie was a bit rushed. Also I will be changing the age of some characters.))

"So… What are you doing for Christmas…?"
The question was simple, but it felt foreign to Lightning as it rolled off his tongue.
He'd never had to ask something like that before. For as long as he could remember, it had always been him and his mom doing their own Christmas thing on their own terms.
But now…
After his mom passes away, a young Lightning finds three new ways to celebrate the Christmas season with very mixed results.

This is the version where Cars that instead of vehicular sentient cars, were instead humanized, and this focuses on Lightning McQueen’s background and backstory since it was confirmed in Cars 3 he was born in 1977 which makes him above in his 40’s in our real-world. This is where the story focuses on the background of NASCAR racing and its legacy and impact on the automobile culture. This will be McQueen's journey to becoming a famous racer, and the trials that come along his way before he paved his path and becoming the first rookie on his way if he can win the Piston Cup in 2006.
