Chapter Text
The gates open without tension now.
That was the first thing Jimin noticed.
Not that there was no caution. There always would be. But it wasn’t the same tight, controlled edge it used to carry, the kind that made every step outside feel like something that needed to be justified.
Now it felt like movement.
Like something they did, not something they risked.
Jimin adjusted the strap of his pack as he stepped out with the others, the familiar weight settling more comfortably than it had the first few times.
“Check your spacing,” Hoseok said as they cleared the outer stretch.
Jimin instinctively moved a little closer to Namjoon.
“Not that close,” Jungkook added, glancing back. “If something comes through, we don’t want to trip over each other.”
Jimin immediately adjusted, flushing slightly.
“Right. Sorry.”
“You’re fine,” Namjoon said, tone easy. “Just keep a line of sight.”
Jin didn’t say anything.
But his gaze flicked once over the formation, tracking everyone.
Settling.
They moved out.
Not rushed.
Not slow.
A steady pace that felt practiced now.
Jimin kept his attention forward, scanning like he’d been taught, trying to take in everything without getting overwhelmed by it.
Broken pavement.
Overgrowth.
Shadows where structures had partially collapsed.
“Call it if you see anything,” Taehyung said lightly from ahead.
“Anything helpful,” Yoongi added.
Jimin huffed a quiet breath.
“Helpful, got it.”
They split naturally as they reached the outer block.
Not far.
Just enough to cover ground efficiently.
“Stick with me,” Hoseok said, motioning Jimin along one side of the street.
Jimin nodded, falling into step beside him.
They checked the first structure together.
A small storefront, mostly cleared out already.
Jimin moved carefully, stepping where Hoseok stepped, watching the way he checked corners, how he scanned shelves even when they looked empty at first glance.
“Not everything obvious is useful,” Hoseok murmured. “And not everything useful is obvious.”
Jimin nodded, absorbing it.
He reached for a container near the back shelf, pausing.
“Still sealed,” he said.
Hoseok glanced over.
“Good. Take it.”
Jimin added it to his pack, something small but solid settling in his chest at the action.
Across the street, Jungkook called out quietly.
“Tracks.”
Everyone shifted back in.
Yoongi crouched first, studying the ground.
Namjoon joined him a second later.
Jimin hovered just behind, trying to see without crowding.
“See the spacing?” Namjoon said, pointing lightly. “They’re not running.” His tone was easy. Certain.
Jimin leaned in slightly.
“Because nothing’s chasing them.”
“Exactly.”
Taehyung scanned the surrounding area.
“Which means we’re probably not walking into anything aggressive.”
“Probably,” Yoongi repeated.
Jimin smiled faintly.
“I like that word more now than I used to.”
They followed the tracks for a short distance.
Not chasing.
Just observing.
Confirming patterns.
“Good sign,” Jin said after a moment. “Means this area is stabilizing.”
Jimin looked up at that.
Stabilizing.
That wasn’t a word he would’ve expected to hear months ago.
They moved again after that, sweeping the nearby buildings more thoroughly.
This time, Jimin didn’t hesitate as much.
He checked shelves.
Opened containers.
Called out what he found.
“Bandages,” he said at one point.
“Take them,” Hoseok replied immediately.
“Still sealed?”
“Yeah.”
“Good.”
By the time they regrouped near the edge of the block, their packs were heavier.
Not full.
But worth bringing back.
Jungkook adjusted the strap over his shoulder.
“Not bad.”
“Not bad at all,” Taehyung agreed.
Jimin shifted his weight slightly, feeling the difference.
“We did good,” he said, a little surprised at himself.
Namjoon glanced at him.
“We did.”
And for once Jimin believed it without hesitation.
The room felt different.
Not softer.
Minjae wasn’t soft.
But something had shifted.
Jin stood at the front, steady as always.
“Perimeter sweep completed. No immediate threats. Eastern block showing signs of environmental stabilization.”
Taehyung stepped forward slightly, setting down part of what they brought back.
“Confirmed wildlife movement. Tracks consistent across multiple passes.”
Hoseok added their collected supplies to the table.
“Medical stock replenished. Limited, but usable.”
Minjae’s gaze moved over it.
Taking it in.
Measuring.
Then to Namjoon.
Not sharp.
Not suspicious.
Just… assessing.
“Efficient routing,” Minjae said.
It wasn’t directed at anyone specifically.
But it landed.
Namjoon didn’t step forward.
Didn’t shrink back either.
He held his position.
Jin answered.
“We optimized based on observed patterns.”
A brief pause.
Minjae nodded once.
“Good.”
Another beat.
Then, “You’ll continue on this rotation.”
Jungkook shifted slightly beside Namjoon.
Taehyung’s posture eased.
Hoseok let out a quiet breath.
Minjae’s gaze lingered for half a second longer than necessary.
Then moved on.
“Dismissed.”
They didn’t rush out.
Didn’t linger either.
Just… left.
Together.
Namjoon didn’t look back.
This time he didn’t need to measure his place in the room.
He already knew where he stood.
And this time, it didn’t feel like something he had to earn.
The hallway wasn’t empty.
It just wasn’t busy.
Voices carried faintly from other rooms, footsteps passing every so often, the distant clang of something being worked on echoing through the structure.
Normal.
As close as they got.
Namjoon had barely made it halfway down before a hand caught his wrist.
He didn’t even startle.
Just let himself be turned, guided, and pressed lightly but unmistakably back against the wall.
“Jin—”
“Hi,” Jin said, like this was a completely normal greeting.
Namjoon blinked at him, already smiling now, softer than he meant to be. “You just saw me.”
“I know.”
Jin didn’t move back.
Didn’t give him space.
He just stood there, close enough that Namjoon could feel the heat of him, steady and familiar.
Namjoon didn’t pull away.
If anything, he leaned into it just slightly, like he wasn’t even aware he was doing it.
Jin’s hand slid from his wrist to his hip, dipping easily under the edge of his shirt.
Skin to skin.
Warm.
Certain.
Namjoon let out a quiet breath, eyes flicking down briefly before returning to Jin’s face.
“You’re not even pretending anymore,” he said, but there was no bite to it. Just quiet amusement.
Jin’s mouth curved.
“Was I supposed to?”
Namjoon huffed softly, clearly unconvinced. “Maybe a little.”
“Mm,” Jin murmured, already leaning closer. “I think I’m past that.”
And then he kissed him.
Light at first.
Just a brush.
Namjoon smiled into it.
Actually smiled.
His hand came up to Jin’s side without hesitation this time, fingers curling there like it was the most natural thing in the world.
“You’re getting bold,” he murmured.
Jin hummed softly.
“You’re still here,” he said. “Figured I’d stop holding back.”
Namjoon’s lips pressed together briefly, like he was trying not to smile again.
“Dangerous decision,” he said quietly.
“Yeah?”
Namjoon met his eyes, something softer there.
“Yeah.”
Jin kissed him again.
Slower this time.
Lingering.
Namjoon leaned into it properly now, just enough that it shifted the balance between them, his hand tightening slightly at Jin’s side.
Jin’s fingers pressed into his hip in response, thumb brushing once, slow and absentminded.
Namjoon exhaled softly against his mouth.
That was where it tipped.
That was where it stopped being light.
When they pulled back, it wasn’t far.
Namjoon’s eyes stayed on his, warm and a little dazed, like he’d forgotten where they were for a second.
Then…
“We’re in a hallway,” he said, quieter now, but there was a laugh sitting just under it.
Jin glanced around briefly, then back at him.
“Mm. Not a very private one either.”
Namjoon shook his head, but he didn’t move away.
Didn’t even try.
“Jin—”
But Jin was already there, shifting down, pressing slow and deliberate over the bond mark at his neck.
Namjoon inhaled sharply, head tipping back before he could stop it.
“You’re unbelievable,” he muttered, but his hand slid up slightly at Jin’s side, holding him there instead of pushing him away.
Jin hummed against his skin, completely unbothered.
“Mm. You like it.”
Namjoon let out a quiet, helpless laugh.
“That’s not the point.”
Jin’s hand flexed at his hip.
“Feels like it is.”
Namjoon didn’t answer that.
Didn’t deny it either.
Instead, his fingers curled a little tighter in Jin’s shirt.
“So this is why we couldn’t find him.”
Namjoon closed his eyes briefly, smile already breaking through. “Of course.”
They both turned.
Jungkook stood a few feet down the hall, arms crossed, looking entirely too pleased with himself.
Taehyung stepped up beside him, already grinning. “We were going to come get you.”
Hoseok appeared behind them, curious immediately. “We thought you got lost.”
Jimin leaned around him, and then froze. “Oh.”
His eyes dropped straight to Namjoon’s neck.
“Oh,” he repeated, quieter.
Namjoon’s hand flew up, too late, laughter slipping out anyway.
Taehyung lit up. “That’s not even subtle.”
Hoseok made a delighted noise. “It isn’t. Oh my god, it actually isn’t.”
Jimin covered his face. “Hyung, at least try. It’s not like that’s fading anytime soon.”
Jungkook snorted. “Yeah, that’s permanent now. You’re not hiding that.”
Namjoon dragged a hand down his face, still smiling. “I hate all of you.”
“You don’t,” Jungkook said easily.
Taehyung tilted his head, glancing between them, clearly enjoying himself. “I mean… what did we expect.”
A beat.
Then, with absolute satisfaction, “Hyung’s got his bonded omega pinned against a wall.”
Jungkook didn’t miss a second. “Yeah, and his alpha definitely isn’t letting us take him.”
Namjoon let out a quiet laugh, ducking his head slightly onto Jin’s shoulder, but he didn’t step away.
Didn’t even try.
Jin just rolled his eyes like this was expected, like he’d already accepted he wasn’t going to win this particular fight.
And then leaned into it.
One arm sliding firmly around Namjoon’s waist, pulling him fully into his chest.
Easy.
Comfortable.
Unapologetic.
Namjoon made a soft sound, more amused than anything, one hand settling lightly against Jin’s chest.
“See?” Jungkook said. “Case closed.”
Taehyung looked deeply pleased. “He’s not even pretending otherwise.”
Yoongi, from the back, shook his head. “He never was.”
“Come on,” Hoseok said finally, still smiling. “We actually did need him for something.”
Jungkook pushed off the wall. “We’ll give you a minute.”
“A very short minute,” Taehyung added.
Jimin made a soft, suffering noise as they all started moving again.
One by one, they disappeared down the hallway.
Their voices faded.
The space quieted.
Jin didn’t let go.
Namjoon didn’t step away.
If anything, he leaned in just a little more.
Jin dipped his head, pressing his face into the curve of Namjoon’s neck again, right over the mark, breathing him in slow and steady.
Namjoon exhaled, softer this time, hand shifting slightly against Jin’s chest.
“Gonna make you feel so safe,” Jin murmured.
Namjoon let out a quiet, fond laugh, tilting his head to give him better access. “You already did, remember?” he said softly. “I got sent into heat.”
Jin stilled.
It was small.
Barely there.
But Namjoon felt it.
His fingers curled a little tighter in Jin’s shirt.
“Not that first one,” he added quickly, gentler now. “Well… it was because of you.”
A tiny pause.
Then, softer, warmer, “But this recent one?”
His thumb brushed lightly against Jin’s chest.
“That one was actually nice.”
Jin exhaled slowly, the tension easing out of him.
“Yeah?” he asked, quieter now.
Namjoon nodded, just a little. “Yeah.”
A beat.
“And you gave me that mark.”
Jin pulled back just enough to look at him, something quietly pleased settling in his expression.
“I did.”
His thumb brushed just beneath it, deliberate.
“It’s permanent now.”
His gaze lingered there for a second before lifting back to Namjoon’s face.
“Looks really good on you.”
Namjoon’s expression softened, something warm settling in.
“Yeah?” he asked, a little quieter.
Jin leaned in, pressing a slow kiss just beside it.
“Yeah.”
Namjoon smiled, small but real.
“Unbelievable.”
Jin kissed him again.
Slow.
Certain.
Unrushed.
When they pulled back, Namjoon lingered for half a second like he considered staying right there.
Then he huffed a quiet laugh.
“We should go.”
“Mm.”
Jin didn’t move immediately.
Namjoon nudged him lightly.
“Come on.”
Jin smiled, finally pulling back just enough, his hand still resting warm at Namjoon’s hip as they pushed off the wall together.
Falling easily into step.
Following the others down the hall.
Together.
