Chapter Text

Sua grabbed Mizi’s hand. Even though Mizi just hit her, Sua still clung to her desperately, that spark never leaving her eyes.

“Just say you are jealous-“

Mizi gasped, not finishing her ridiculous yelling. Sua was pulling her through alleyways with genuine fear on her eyes. At that moment Mizi felt a gut wrenching feeling. Was her best friend afraid of her?

“Mizi, there’s a zombie behind us!” Sua yelled.

Mizi confusingly turned around and Sua in fact wasn’t crazy. There was a zombie trailing behind them. Mizi’s whole body stopped functioning. It felt like if Sua wasn’t there pulling her, she would just give in to death. It wasn’t her first time being followed and somehow seeing a real fucking zombie wasn’t as scary as seeing a man trailing after Mizi in the dark.

She got a glimpse of that lifeless creature with the soul drained out of them. That was not a person anymore. That was when Mizi started to run without being pulled.

After a while of running without paying attention to anything, they reached Sua’s block, shutting the entrance door behind them. That zombie was far long gone but Mizi panicked even more, sliding down on to the floor. She felt like she was about to throw up from all the pressure, all the struggles life had been throwing onto her. Sua sat down too, barely touching Mizi’s hand for comfort.

“What are we gonna do?” Sua asked quietly.

Mizi didn’t reply, she pulled her legs to her chest, shutting down completely. She pressed her head to the glade door observing the calm evening street that remained untouched.

“We have to go somewhere. Let’s find a military camp or evacuation group somewhere… or something…”

Mizi couldn’t force herself to do anything. The sudden outbreak felt so distant like it wasn’t happening right in front of her eyes.

“I can’t go anywhere, Sua. I’m under a contract, my shoot is tomorrow.”

Sua’s eyes narrowed.

“I can’t just abandon my job like y-“

Mizi’s face was suddenly burning. She touched the place where Sua had just slapped her. It was the first time Sua ever raised a hand on Mizi. It felt so raw and real.

“God, can you wake up?!,” Sua yelled, tears dropping down her cheeks, “We are in a real life zombie infection and you are still thinking about your problems! I just want normal you back, I want my best friend back! I can’t do this alone.”

Sua raised up, her face darkening. She was sobbing uncontrollably.

Mizi wanted to reach out, to apologise to cry with Sua but unfortunately there was no way Mizi could go back to normal. That was who her career made her out to be. She was just an idol and an idol was just an object to entertain.

“You are right,” Mizi said in a lower voice, “I can’t be much of a help. Just go.”

“You are not serious.”

“I am.”

Sua desperately waited for more, searching for something in Mizi’s eyes, but Mizi just couldn’t. With that Sua walked away up the stairs to her apartment, the sound of her light footsteps fading.

Mizi sat in the same pose for quite some time. The sun started to set down and occasionally Mizi heard screaming or saw a zombie walking outside. The street was no longer peaceful. It was drenched in suffering.

After a few cigarettes Mizi closed her eyes, relaxing her mind in all this chaos. Maybe it was her escape. She wouldn’t have to see disgusting faces filled with lust use her like a toy tomorrow. She could just exist without leaving.

“Get up.”

Mizi’s eyes shut open. Sua stood over her looking like an angel. So ethereally beautiful despite looking tired.

“Huh?”

Mizi quickly moved away from the glass door woth a gasp. A group of zombies gathered outside, all of their eyes on Mizi. They wanted to devour her but could only watch with hungry eyes.

“I got all the supplies and I also have our route on a map. If you need anything we can still go back to my apartment.” Sua said firmly, but there was still softness in her voice.

Mizi sighed. It seemed like Sua would never give up on her, even if it meant hurting herself. That oddly filled Mizi with hope.

They went upstairs to Sua’s apartment by Mizi’s request. It was small but it was probably the most comfortable place in the world. Mizi and Sua spent a lot of time here during high school preparing to be idols or goofing around. Those days were truly the best.

Mizi started getting ready by doing basic needs properly. She had no idea where they were heading, probably a military camp as Sua said earlier. Mizi didn’t want to ask. There was still distance established between them.

Mizi removed all her makeup in front of a mirror before heading out. She looked horrible almost like she was part of the zombies. But she kind of felt easier at heart, looking at her bare self.

Mizi was still paranoid about going out into the public where someone might take a photo of her, but the zombies she saw earlier made her truly grasp the situation.

“I’m ready,” Mizi called out, leaning against the wall.

Sua came out with two backpacks.

“Here,” she gave one to Mizi.

Those things were sure heavy as shit.

But there was something smaller in Sua’s hand. She gently placed a little heart shaped necklace on Mizi’s hands, their fingers brushing against each other for longer than usual.

“You don’t have to take this, but it’s a necklace my sister gave to me before she passed. It’s a good luck charm.”

Mizi locked her eyes with Sua’s for a moment. This necklace was the most important thing Sua had. And she gave it to Mizi who didn’t even deserve it. The same Mizi who tree away all Sua’s gifts for the last couple of months. She teared up, still trying to keep all of her emotions inside of her but miserably failing.

“It’s okay,” Sua whispered and placed her hands on Mizi’s shoulders.

“We’ll get through everything.”
