Late Night Talks

Summary:

Some nights are harder than others. Sometimes the burden is too much to carry.

Good thing you're not alone.

Notes:

Really short drabble that I began to write to overcome writer's block and ended up making it more personal than expected. It's also my first attempt at a dialogue-only story.

Hope you enjoy.

Work Text:

“Amy? Is that you?”

“Oh, hi Tails. How are you doing?”

“I'm good…? Why are you laying on the grass?”

“I'm stargazing.”

“Okay. Why are you laying on the grass outside of my workshop?”

“Too many lights in the city. Can't see stars.”

“... I see.”

“Do you wanna stargaze with me?”

“Uh. Sure, I guess.”

“...”

“...”

“Is everything okay, Amy?”

“Yes. The sky is clear and this is an old dress I don't mind getting dirty.”

“Uh-huh. Well. Do you want me to lend you a tail?”

“That'd be nice, thanks. Heh, it's like a fuzzy pillow.”

“H-hey, that tickles…”

“Oh, it also smells really nice. I expected it to smell like oil or something.”

“You're lucky. Today was my bi-weekly shower.”

“Eww, Tails…”

“I'm joking! Geez…”

“...”

“...”

“Can I ask you something, Tails?”

“Sure. Anything.”

“Are you… content? With the way your life is right now?”

“Huh. I guess so? I got my planes and my inventions, and I can always explore a new island or zone if things get stale.”

“I see.”

“And what about you?”

“I can't complain. I got a stable job at the bakery, a nice apartment, friends that care about me...”

“I didn't hear a 'yes'.”

“...”

“...”

“Your hand is warm.”

“T-thanks. You just, uh, seemed like you needed it.”

“I did. You're kinda good at this. Do you have damsels in distress laying on your grass very often?”

“Oh, totally. I keep tripping on pretty girls every time I take a walk in my yard.”

“... So you're saying I'm pretty?”

“I, no– I mean, yeah? Y-you're not ugly but like, uh–”

“Holding a girl's hand and complimenting her when she's clearly vulnerable… I didn't take you for this kind of guy, Tails…”

“What? No! T-t-that's not it– stop that!”

“Pfft. You're cute when you blush like that. I get why Rouge teases you so much.”

“That's what I get for trying to help…”

“...”

“...”

“The stars are beautiful, aren't they?”

“They are. I'm glad I got to see them tonight.”

“I'm sorry for, like, just showing up outside your house. I guess I just needed to see a friend.”

“I don't mind it at all. But why not call me? I could fly to your home, you didn't have to come all the way here.”

“I… didn't want to be there, if I'm being honest. As much as I like my place, some nights it gets so, so lonely. And it has been feeling like that more and more often.”

“... Y'know, I could visit you. It's not that far, you could give me a call on nights like these and I'd come flying to your rescue.”

“Ha. Of course you're offering that. I think I abused enough of your kindness by showing up at this hour and stealing your night.”

“I've no idea what you're talking about. I planned on stargazing tonight anyway, doing so with a cute girl by my side is an upgrade in my book.”

“You… you can be pretty bold when you want to, huh? But I'm serious Tails, you really don't have to–”

“You're not forcing me to do it, Amy. I might not be nearly as social as you, but I also get lonely sometimes. And I would appreciate a friend in those lonely nights too.”

“I… do you… really mean it…?”

“Of course I do. You came here tonight because you knew I'd make you company, didn't you? Now I'll be showing up at your place, and you'll have to put up with me. Unless you want me to lay by your door until someone trips on me.”

“You– you really– ugh. You're something else, y'know that?”

“Uh-huh. You can pout all you want, I see the corner of your month turning.”

“Don't push your luck, Prower.”

“...”

“...”

“Tails?”

“...”

“Tails? Are you awake?”

“...”

“Really? Making a girl carry you to your own bed? That's so lame…”

“...”

“... You better keep your promise, you hear me? I will be waiting for you.”

“...”

“Goodnight, Miles. And thank you.”

“...”
