Chapter Text
Jungkook groaned lowly as he came to, wincing when he managed to crack his eyes open; his entire body was sore and he didn’t understand why. He had been sitting comfortably against the edge of a cliff that overlooked the ocean, the view of the open water and slight whisk of the wind caressing his face working to calm him. The pale pink sky was growing dark as the moon rose above the horizon, the tide becoming calm as well.
Suddenly, there had been a loud crack that pierced the air, as red curved lines etched themselves into the rock beneath him. He hadn’t had time to react, and then his body was falling, weightless against the dark expanses of the endless space around him. He watched as the fading light ceased completely above him and he had fallen into darkness.
He now felt like he had flown into a brick wall.
“Oh my God, are you okay? Please don’t try to get up-“ He heard a soft yet worried voice above him and barely refrained from sarcastically answering that trying to stand was the last thing on his list of things to do in the immediate future. The figure came into focus, and Jungkook’s heart momentarily stopped.
The man staring down at him in concern was the most beautiful creature he had ever laid eyes on. He gasped, realization settling in as his gaze traced the features of the stranger. A pale face, plump lips, platinum blonde hair, the widest shoulders; a light was shining down from above, casting a glow around them.
He sat up in a panic, ignoring the warning just moments earlier, and tried to scramble away. The room around them was bright, and Jungkook’s small leathery wings flapped in vain as anxiety filled his entire being-
Why the fuck had he been summoned to Heaven?
Seokjin watched in horror as the boy shifted away from him. He was mentally chastising himself for being so stupid-
He had set everything up perfectly, following the instructions he had found in his summoning book. He had been alone in this cottage for so long; he had just wanted a companion, someone to talk to and to play with. The barrier surrounding his land made it impossible for others to wander to his door, and he wasn’t powerful enough to cancel the spell that had been put up all those years ago.
After lots of thought and research from books he had conjured, he had come up with the perfect plan. If no one could visit him, then he would simply make it so they appeared already inside. It was a genius idea, and one that could not go wrong.
He stared at the shaking form of the demon child in front of him.
Apparently it could.
He had only meant to summon a fairie or sprite, as they seemed to be the most human friendly and social able, from what he had read anyway. He didn’t know anyone else, except for the people that had locked him here, so he was relying on his research and skills in order to complete the ritual. He was positive he had drawn the circle on the floor correctly, and he had practiced the pronunciation of the words in the spell numerous times.
But now there was a kid in front of him and he had no idea how it had happened. He was certain of one thing however-
This demon’s parents were going to straight up murder him if he didn’t get him back to where he belonged. And Seokjin, even though he was lonely, was quite content to keep on living, thank you very much.
The only problem was, the book he had been using was now a charred mess on the ground; after he had completed the incantation the air surrounding his immediate perimeter had cackled with electricity, setting a few of his research novels ablaze as well as some of the blankets and food he had off to the side. His quick thinking had moved his hands, conjuring water to put out the small fires that had started. He could only do so much. The contents of the books were meaningless to him now.
Which meant that this boy was stuck here with no way back at the moment.
Seokjin watched helplessly as the dark haired teen tried to claw at the wall behind him, eyes shut tightly in fear- of him.
“Hey, it’s okay-“ He tried to reassure, resisting the urge to grab the boy and just hug him tightly. He didn’t like when people were angry or afraid- “I’m not going to hurt you.” He glanced around but unfortunately the dinner he had prepared was nothing more than ashes next to the circle. He was frustrated; he didn’t have anything to offer besides his words of encouragement.
“Please, I promise, I didn’t mean to summon you. I’ll try to fix it as soon as I can.”
The scared demon peaked at him from over his shoulder; he could see the wide range of emotions run over his face and Seokjin felt his chest tighten more. He would never attempt to summon a companion after he sent this child back; he didn’t want this to happen to anyone else ever.
“Y-you summoned me? Why are you trying to summon demons to Heaven?” The horned creature asked timidly, making the blonde’s eyes reflect the same confusion back at his guest.
“Heaven? What, no- this is my house.” He replied and gestured his hand to the open room surrounding them. The color scheme was light and pastel, some of the furniture moved against the wall to make room for the summoning circle Seokjin had drawn on the floor.
“I thought-“ The demon started, eyes gazing around the open space in fascination, taking it all in. “you were an angel.”
Seokjin’s loud laughter made him flinch but the man took no notice, his head thrown back in amusement.
“An angel? Me? That’s so funny-“ His laugh trailed off to a light hiccupped giggle. “I’ve never been called that before. I’ll take it as compliment, thank you.” The blonde smiled and looked down at his circle, now blurred and smudged. No way to try to send him home that way. “I was trying to summon a sprite. But instead I somehow called you. Trust me, the last thing I wanted was to kidnap a demon child so I’ll-“
“Child?”
“Yes, I read that demon children have small wings and small horns- aren’t you still a kid?”
Seokjin had no time to react as Jungkook suddenly flitted in front of him, glare set in his eyes and lips formed into a deep frown. His shoulders were grasped by strong hands and he felt his upper body being pushed to the ground, wincing in pain as his back and his head collided with the floor. The demon growled low in his throat.
“I have lived for hundreds of years and have fought in two wars between Heaven and Hell, don’t you dare try to call me that-“ His wings bristled and his sharp fangs snapped his lower teeth at every drawn out syllable.
“O-Okay, I’m sorry.” Seokjin whispered, tears pricking the corner of his eyes in fear. He would not use his magic to defend himself, in his own home. If he had offended this demon, he would let him have that much- “I only know things from what I’ve read in books. I’m sorry if my perception of you was wrong. I’m not allowed to leave this place so books are all I have-“ He hurried to explain. “I’ll try to look for a way to send you back as soon as I can.”
Jungkook stared down at the shaking man before he sighed and sat back. He ran a hand through his hair. “It’s fine. I just used to get enough shit about it when I was recruited for the first war, before I made a name for myself. Your facts aren’t wrong, but the main reason I look young is that demons fully mature after they pick their mate and bond. I haven’t found anyone that has caught my interest-“ He stared over to the beautiful blonde that had summoned him. “Yet.” He added quietly, suddenly feeling slightly shy about having to explain himself.
But Seokjin just smiled gently and sat up a bit, hand patting Jungkook’s forearm. “It’s okay, I can see that it’s a touchy subject. I won’t pry. Are you hungry? I’m a pretty good cook, if I say so myself.” Seokjin offered, trying to break the ice, so to speak. He was simply trying to make it up to the stranger.
Jungkook was silent for a moment, not sure if he could trust the blonde, but after he bit, he nodded. He stood and extended his hand. He hid his rapidly flushing face as Seokjin grasped his offered hand; he helped the other stand and followed him to the kitchen. He quickly sniffed the air before nodding, even though the blonde had his back turned to him as he grabbed a few bowls and cups from the cabinets. It smelled nice, fresh even, and he couldn’t smell nor see any signs of danger or poison. He would still watch the stranger like a hawk, but his senses were usually pretty good about warning him when something was amiss.
“I’m Seokjin, by the way.” The blonde said as he turned on the water to rinse the lettuce. After it was washed, he sat the bowl on the counter and moved over to the cutting board, where a few tomatoes, carrots, and other small vegetables sat.
“Jungkook.” The demon replied simply, observing his summoner go about mixing ingredients and cutting them smaller, adding them to the large bowl. His body felt sore, so he sat in the chair nearby, wings bristling and arms stretching. The room was simple, spacious enough for multiple people but Jungkook could tell that Seokjin lived by himself. He had even said he had been trying to summon a companion for company and that he was confined to this place-
Before he could inquire further, a smaller bowl was put in front of him. He preferred meat but the colorful mix before him looked appetizing enough, so he accepted the fork given to him and took a quick bite. The blonde had twisted his hand to the other side of the table, and a chair for himself appeared with a crack.
Jungkook swallowed, curious. “If you’re a mage, why don’t you just do everything with your magic? You just made this from scratch-“
“I could, technically.” Seokjin shrugged, grabbing his own fork. “I’ve taught myself how to cook, and I enjoy it. Normally I don’t like to use my magic unless I need to. I’ve set up a system with the garden and I can conjure random books. Other than that, I don’t really use it that often. I do have permanent charms set up for temperature control and everyday things, but I only had to cast those once. It was a little weird to me at first, it’s like wishing for something and instantly having it available. I’m the only one-” He paused, face glancing down to the table as he twirled his fork. “Nevermind, it’s not important. How’s the food? I only had simple things so I apologize for not having more to choose from. The dinner I had previously prepared kind of got destroyed when you appeared.”
“This is good, thank you.” Jungkook replied sincerely, but his stomach rumbled anyway. “Do you have any meat?” He asked, slightly taken aback when Seokjin flinched.
“I-I don’t. I don’t eat it.” The blonde shuddered just thinking about it. Jungkook could understand, if Seokjin was here by himself, he would have to kill if he wanted to eat it, and judging from his reaction, he had tried before-
“Um, it’s okay. But do you mind-?”
“No, no please. If you need it; just-“ Seokjin paused, trying to think of how to phrase his request. “Can you do it where I won’t see it?”
Jungkook could take the hint and nodded, already standing. The blonde’s food had been only slightly satisfying, but in order to feel full, he would have to find some meat; it was what his body craved to function and he didn’t know how long he would be stuck here.
“While you’re gone, I’ll try to summon as many tomes as I can think of on demons and how to get you back home, okay? I’m sorry you got pulled into all this mess. There’s a small lake if you go to the right when you leave, if you prefer fish-”
Jungkook just nodded and headed for the door, and was out of sight before Seokjin could blink.
A little ways away from the cabin, the demon came to a stop. It looked like they were in the middle of the woods but he didn’t know where. He had never visited the human world before, so this place was all new to him. It looked the same as the forests he had seen every day in his own world, except this one seemed to be more lively and colorful. Shades of green and brown filled his vision, he wasn’t quite used to it; he was familiar with blacks and reds, the trees dark since they were dead and decayed. This place was definitely full of things he had never seen; out of the corner of his eye, near the side of the lake that Seokjin had advised him of, he caught the sight of a slight blue glimmer. He sprinted towards it, only to be knocked back as if he had run into a wall.
He frowned and rubbed his cheek. The blue shimmer was right in front of him, and he followed the slight pulse as a wave ran up and overhead-
It was a barrier.
It seemed to go for miles in both directions, and he didn’t know how high it went, but it did start to curve slightly so he figured it must be some kind of dome shape. He scowled, mildly annoyed. He reeled back his arm and punched at the barrier, smirking in mild satisfaction as he heard a loud cracking sound. He hit again and again at the invisible wall, and finally it shattered, blue sparkles littering the air around him. He brushed off his arms and hair, and continued on his way.
No pathetic barrier would contain him from where he dared to wander.
After Jungkook was sated enough, it had already been a few hours since he had left the cabin. Technically he didn’t have to return, but something drew him back to the blonde, a pull he didn’t quite have a name for. He made sure to wash away any traces of blood from his hands and face; his lips were a shade darker but the rest of the evidence of his deed was long gone. With the amount he had eaten, he would probably be good for about a week before needing to hunt again.
The demon didn’t bother knocking as he opened the door and stepped through the threshold, a pile of books almost as tall as him toppling over to land scattered at his feet. Similar stacks were everywhere, and he could see a slouched figure sitting at the table, head tilted down. Streaks of sweat littered the back of Seokjin’s neck and his forehead.
“Welcome back.” The blonde acknowledged softly, not looking up from the text he was reading. He flipped a page, and then another. Jungkook stood awkwardly at the entrance.
“Are you okay?” He asked wearily.
He barely caught the slight tilt of Seokjin’s head. “I’m fine, I probably just used too much magic when I conjured all these books; it took a lot out of me, usually I just summon one or two at a time.” The blonde sighed and brought a hand up to rub at his eyes. “I went to work as quickly as I could after you left. I haven’t even found a trace of how to send you back- I don’t even know if a human has ever summoned a demon before. I’m sorry, I’ll try to look faster-“
“Hey, calm down-“ Jungkook said, surprising himself. What did he care if Seokjin worked himself into a fever- “You can take a slight rest if you want; I can tell that what happened was clearly an accident, somehow. Besides, this is a nice little retreat. My home was getting boring, if you will. The same things to do all day every day-“
“You can say that again.” Seokjin huffed, marking the page in his current tome and closing it gently. “It gets very lonely, and there’s only so much one can do left to his own devices.” He grabbed the hem of his shirt and pulled it up, dabbing at his slightly wet forehead before straightening his shirt once more. Jungkook fought back a blush at the display, resisting the urge to raise the fabric himself and trail his hands over Seokjin’s smooth, tempting stomach. The blonde didn’t seem to pay his action a second thought, however, as he continued on with conversation. “Were you able to, um-“
“Yes, thank you.” Jungkook nodded. “I’ll be fine for a while.”
“Well, guess we can start getting ready for bed. It’s a little early but I think some rest will do us both some good.” Seokjin suggested, getting up and making his way to a door Jungkook hadn’t took notice of before. “Do you want to sleep out here, or in my room? I don’t mind either way-“
“I’ll sleep out here.”
He missed the brief frown before the blonde’s lips curved slightly to form a gentle smile. “Of course.” He waved his hand and a twin-sized bed appeared off the side, complete with a blanket and over sized pillow. “I’m sure that will be a little more comfortable than the couch. Please let me know if you need anything. Rest well Jungkook.”
The door was shut.
And Jungkook had to stop himself from calling for Seokjin to come back.
They had settled into a somewhat normal routine. Seokjin still poured most of his attention into the books he was able to summon, but resources were starting to get limited, even Jungkook could tell by the blonde’s demeanor and more frequent outbursts of frustrations that ranged from heavy sighs to hitting his forehead against the table.
Jungkook had spent a lot of his time outside, and Seokjin wondered what he did most of the time. The barrier that held him captive was wide, but the demon could’ve staked the entire place in one day. It had been about a week since Seokjin had accidently summoned the brown haired man. He no longer thought of him as a kid, nothing he did justified that term, and the blonde could sense a masculinity to the older man that had yet to be shown, a dominance that had no need to rear its head because Seokjin would not challenge him in that department. He would be a fool to go against the demon at all-
“Why don’t you take a break?” Jungkook suggested, feeling a bit bored after reading for so long- He didn’t offer to help often, mainly because he didn’t see the point. After staying with Seokjin this long, he could almost openly admit that he didn’t want to return to his world. This had been a nice change of pace, and even though Seokjin’s attention was elsewhere most of the day, they conversed during the evening about light topics, neither of them sure when it was alright to push for more personal topics- Jungkook didn’t care what they talked about, he just liked being near the blonde haired mage.
“Sure, I could use some fresh air. Do you want to go take a walk?” Seokjin stood, marked his page but kept the book he had been engrossed in open.
The pair were soon walking next to a river, and Jungkook noticed the blonde looking around in confusion and jumping slightly at every sound that echoed in the vicinity. The clouds overhead were darkening, they would have to return the cabin soon but the demon would keep Seokjin outside for as long as he was able to. He scowled as he heard a startled gasp when a bird chirped.
“Are you okay? You’re acting skittish and this was supposed to be a relaxing distraction-“ He regretted his harsh tone but he couldn’t help it- Seokjin was acting weird.
The blonde lowered his head. “I’m sorry, I’m just- I’ve never been out this far before. There’s been a barrier up ever since I started living here and I don’t recognize anything around here, I don’t know where we are. We should’ve come across it by now-“
“I destroyed it when I left to hunt days ago.” He said simply. He stopped walking and turned back to Seokjin, who stood frozen, form trembling slightly, a look of uncontrolled fear on his face.
“You-you did what?”
Jungkook starred back, and shrugged. “It was just a dumb magical barrier, and it was in my way, so I shattered it. It was actually quite weak; it didn’t take much.”
The thunder rumbled louder, closer.
“You don’t understand what you’ve done, oh God-“ Seokjin’s eyes were wild as they tried to look in all directions at once, an arm coming up to cradle his stomach, offering himself comfort; his breathing became labored as he tried to process the information that had just been dropped like a fucking bomb. “We have to go; we have to get back to the cabin. This is not good, not good at all-“ He kept muttering quietly, quickly turning to head back to the cottage. Jungkook grabbed his arm before he could step away, and lightning flashed against the dark, shadowed clouds. Another crack of thunder.
“Hey, calm down-“
“No, please. Just- I’ll explain later. We have to go, it’s not safe-“
Not safe? Jungkook was fully capable of taking care of himself, thank you very much. But Seokjin was pulling his body away, and he quickly slid his hand down and entangled their fingers together, keeping quiet as he followed the ruffled blonde through the forest. He wanted answers but he wouldn’t fight it right now; they didn’t have time and riling Seokjin up further would help no one-
The rain came pouring down, drenching them to the bone in a matter of minutes. Jungkook could have sprinted back to the cabin in a matter of seconds, but he couldn’t leave Seokjin to fend for himself, especially in his current state and he didn’t know if the blonde’s body would be able to handle the speed in which he could travel.
They kept running, and soon the cottage came into view. Seokjin opened the door and entered, but the floor was slick from their drenched bodies and he slipped to the harsh hardwood ground just inside the door, Jungkook following him because he had not been paying too close attention to their fingers still being intertwined together. His body harshly fell on top of Seokjin’s own.
The demon groaned and sat up, hands now on either side of Seokjin’s head to help hold up his body weight. He took a glance down at the blonde and instantly regretted it.
The mage’s hair was wet and wild, his slightly long fringe pushed back, exposing his forehead. Small water droplets trailed down the sides of his face and his plump lips were parted as he gasped for air, still trying to get his bearings back from running all the way back. A slight flush had dusted against his cheeks and his shirt was completely soaked through, sticking to the blonde’s chest, the white material almost transparent-
The demon moved one of his hands to caress a heated cheek, ignoring Seokjin’s startled look of confusion.
Jungkook leaned down slowly.
And kissed him.
