Chapter Text
But that was a year ago.
The sky had erupted in a brilliant explosion, a burst of light that burned itself into their memories. The shockwave had torn through the air, blowing the tails of their bandanas as the unknown heroes of the day stood frozen in its wake. Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo watched helplessly as debris rained down around them. Tears, unbidden, streaked down their faces. Their hearts stopped in their chests, and their breaths came in ragged gasps. They prayed to hear their brother’s voice once more over the coms. The voice that never came.
Mikey had tried. He really had. But no amount of his "magic hands" could fix this. The ache in his heart was unbearable. Raphael crawled to him, pulling him into his shell and wrapping him in an embrace that was meant to comfort but only deepened the pain. Mikey broke down, silent sobs wracking his body.
They both turned to Donnie, who stood motionless, staring at the mark left in the sky. It was slowly fading, the swirling clouds consuming the last remnants of its brightness. His tears were silent, tracing paths down his face, but he didn’t move. Was he breathing? Neither Raph nor Mikey could tell. Donnie’s eyes were wide, unblinking, fixed on the vanishing phenomenon.
Was he even thinking? They couldn’t say. But they’d never seen him look so... lost. So broken. They weren’t sure which word fit.
One thing they did know for sure—Leo had gone through the portal. Leo had banished the Kraang back to their prison dimension.
But that was a year ago.
