Notes:

"dude you can't name every fic after a wave to earth song" watch me

as the windbreaker server knows, i took some creative liberties regarding certain aspects of the school. very minor stuff. i also basically had to build a personality for two of these characters from about 10 pieces of information maximum, so please don't judge the characterization of the twins too harshly as they're basically my walking headcanons mixed with their character sheets in this fic.

i don't know when this will update, this chapter is short as hell and it took me weeks lol. inspired by a conversation with senkukogetsu <3

Chapter 1: 0.1 rain

Chapter Text

Bang.

Uryuu puts his cup of tea down following his twin brother slamming the table in front of them, effectively sending the utensils flying.

“Aren’t you sick of it!?” The older twin loudly whispers. Here we go again.

“It’s been years ,” Five, to be specific. “how much longer do we have to beat around the bush!?” Most likely five more.

Seiryuu redirects his attention back to what they had been observing before. From their window booth in Cafe Pothos, they have a clear view of Tsubaki and Umemiya sitting on the stools at the bar counter, chatting away with their food long forgotten. His gaze has gone from fascination to plain agitation.

Uryuu can’t blame him. They’ve been watching the same scene since they met Tsubaki. To her credit, it was only two years ago. They technically didn’t have the right to bring up all five years of her acquaintanceship with Umemiya. Still, Uryuu would be lying if he said watching the two dance around each other didn’t nag at him at times. He couldn’t be bothered with what they were doing at any given moment, but on more than one occasion the team had been late to patrol and even missions because their captain was busy flirting, or rather some lame excuse for flirting.

“Okay. So what’s the game plan?”

Uryuu looks to see Seiryuu suddenly staring at him, as if he was the one who decided that something must be done about this and he was the one bothered enough to drop his fork on the floor. He barely raises an eyebrow.

“Yes I know , but we can’t leave this year without seeing this go somewhere!” Seiryuu argued.

We absolutely could. Uryuu focuses on his tea again. A few moments later, he sees a plate of takoyaki slide across the table into his vision. Seiryuu grins, knowing very well what he was doing. Uryuu simply glares at the offending snack. The worst part about having a sibling is the fact that they’ll have an encyclopedia of your weaknesses at any given moment. Uryuu pulls the plate towards him and picks up one of the skewers, chewing as he waits for Seiryuu to come up with a plan.

His brother stares uselessly out the window, and Uryuu isn’t sure if he was thinking or if he’d given up already. Suddenly, Seiryuu snaps to attention. He pulls out his phone and starts rapidly typing.

“I’ve totally got this.”

Uryuu knows exactly how he ended up in this situation and isn’t very happy about it. He was supposed to be home two hours ago. His brother was supposed to be home two hours ago. His phone is dead in his pocket and his brother is trying to pick a lock. He suddenly remembers his mother’s concerns about enrolling in Furin. “ I didn’t raise you two to become delinquents! ” she had said. His brother’s protests saying they only do these things to keep the town safe are starting to mean less and less.

He hears a click and a whispered cheer from his twin. Seiryuu reaches into the small locker and pulls out a plain black umbrella with a hot pink handle, waving it around.

“Mission success!” If Seiryuu cares at all about how concerningly easy the locks broke, he doesn’t show it. Uryuu spares a glance at the lockers they already passed as a result of forgetting Tsubaki’s assigned number. He gives a small nod of his head over his shoulder, and Seiryuu happily skips ahead to hide outside, just under the arbor away from the rain. Uryuu follows him out to sit behind a stack of old cardboard boxes as they wait for their two leaders.

The question “What the hell are we still doing here Mom said she made us onigiri” was silently asked from one twin to the other. Seiryuu hadn’t explained the plan until much later, but Uryuu still followed him as they “snuck” back into the school. Using the word loosely, considering the school didn’t exactly have security and no one would have questions had they seen the vice captains of Jikoku walking around.

“It’s going to rain in about an hour. What’s the most romantic thing you can do in the rain?” Seiryuu asked out loud, not expecting a verbal response. Uryuu didn’t know. Uryuu didn’t care.

“Share an umbrella, obviously!” Seiryuu approached the shoe lockers, and suddenly Uryuu didn’t like where this was going. He watched as his brother started skimming the numbers, letting out a thoughtful hum before turning to him.

“Was Tsubaki’s locker 120, or 102?” Silence. It was 021, but Uryuu wasn’t about to be an accomplice in this. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t know what the future would hold. Still, he wasn’t too surprised by his brother’s actions when he ended up trying every locker with each combination. Uryuu’s bobby pin would become damaged beyond repair following all the breaking-not-entering.

Uryuu feels a hand on his shoulder, and he carefully peeks out from behind the boxes. Seiryuu places pressure on his shoulder to push himself up and look as well.

The twins watch as Umemiya walks out, talking to Tsubaki as they exit the building together. Tsubaki has a hand gently messing with the ends of her hair, but the rain muffles whatever conversation they’re having. Uryuu stares blankly, the conversation continuing as if the two of them have no intention of actually leaving. He resists the urge to sigh. He can feel Seiryuu growing impatient above him and fears for the moment his twin decides to just walk up to them and shove them together.

Understandably, this doesn’t happen. Umemiya pulls out his umbrella and gently takes Tsubaki’s hand in a reassuring manner, and they walk out into the drizzle together. Uryuu feels Seiryuu tense behind him, clearly holding back from expressing his excitement. He doesn’t understand what exactly this is supposed to accomplish. Knowing the two of them personally, this isn’t going to change anything. It was a waste of their time and a waste of the hot onigiri at home.

Still, he can’t deny that Tsubaki’s smile around their leader was unlike any other joy she expressed. Maybe that little thing was worth it.

Fortunately for Uryuu’s stomach, the drizzle subsides before the pair even reaches the gate. Tsubaki seems to point it out, and Umemiya subsequently lowers his umbrella with a gentle shake. Uryuu can practically see the smoke coming out of his brother’s ears. They stay quiet and watch their seniors laugh as they continue walking together, only to separate just past the school’s entrance.

Almost immediately, Seiryuu shoots up from their hiding spot, ruffling his hair.

“Seriously?” He sighs. “The weather said rain, not ten-minute drizzle.”

Uryuu doesn’t point out that they’d been here for nearly three hours now, and it had started raining two hours ago.
