Chapter 1: Prologue: Hit the road

Chapter Text

Prologue

The white and yellow lines, in a loop, are what they have been seeing for two days now. The darkness around is so deep, the headlights clear only a part of the road. It’s something Alan is used to now, something usually recomforting. After the horrific last few days, something ordinarily boring is comforting, there are no awful surprises. Alan has his hands on the wheel, eyes on the road and his mind on his pack. Beside him, Kenta is quietly staring outside, the blood on his face is dried now. But the injury  on his jaw will certainly leave a scar. They couldn't take him to a hospital, in fact there probably isn't a hospital operating right now. There are no safe places anymore. They are alive, nothing else matters. In the back seat, Jeff and Kim are deeply asleep. They comfortably lay on the other arms. Their snoring is a melody for Alan’s ears. Since the event, the two omegas have found tenderness and comfort in each other's arms. Alan doesn't mind, he likes the idea that his pack can be bonded. If it's the end of the world, all love and tenderness are welcome. He knows that Jeff is his soul mate. He is happy that his pack members are close.

Alan sighs, what a nightmare they lived through, he almost lost everyone. If he had not experienced the events himself, he would not have believed it. Zombies? Really? What the fuck what’s going on?  A week ago the only importances were Jeff, the pack, the new race’s season and the sponsors. His life was not perfect, but Alan was happy, he had love and family. Now he still has his lover and his family, but also these fucking zombies on their asses. They have to leave behind their homes, the garage, their world.

What if he couldn't manage to keep all his pack alive? What if the zombies had taken Kenta and Kim before Babe could reach them? What if they couldn’t go to the garage to take the supplies they needed?  What if North and Sonic hadn't been able to reach them in time?  What if Jeff didn’t wake up after his meltdown and he didn’t arrive at time? What if the zombies devoured him in front of him? What if…  Alan has the feeling of losing control, he knows he has to take a break for the safety of all.

“Kenta, I need a break. I can't… Could you drive for a moment?” Alan asks the man beside him.He has learned in recent days that to survive, you have to rely on those you trust.

“Of course Alan, I’m not sleepy.” Kenta says without a smile, but his eyes are warm.

He stops the car in the middle of the empty road, the car behind him does the same. A crackle in the walkie talkie and Babe's voice is heard:

“Everything alright Alan?” Babe asks with concern.

“Yay, just need a break. I have to sleep. Kenta will take the wheel.” Alan replies, squeezing his eyes because of exhaustation.

“No problem guys, it’s safe, I hear nothing around. But do it quickly. Better be safe than dead”. Babes says with a serious tone.

“Of course. Everything is good for you?” Alan asks, looking at the same time to the rear-view mirror to the other car.

“Yay no worries, Charlie is deeply asleep and the dog is happily sitting on the back bench with North and Sonic, also deeply asleep.” Babes answers with a smirk in his voice.

“Great, same here Jeff and Kim are deeply asleep. Will take the road again for a few hours. When the sun rises, we’ll find a place to rest.”  Alan says before opening the door and exiting the car.

The night is fresh, there are many stars.  He stares at the starry sky, in other circumstances it could have been beautiful, almost romantic to be on the road with his lover. But, the reality is just a shit, unreal, with death and zombies waiting for them to tear them all apart.  He turns around and walks to the passenger side, passing beside Kenta who is doing the same toward the driver side. He enters the car, heavily sitting and closes the door. Kenta nods and the car is moving.

“Don’t mind if I put on my music while I'm driving?”  Kenta asks without leaving his sight out of the road.

“Hum...” Alan replies, half asleep already.

The first notes of jazz echo through the car, something rhythmic and happy with a grainy, warm woman’s voice. Alan smiles, before Morpheus holds him, he thinks about the irony of the situation: the world is collapsing because of a fucking zombie apocalypse and he's hitting the road with his pack and a happy, jazzy song as a soundtrack.

Quizas, quizas, quizas… the voice sings along in the darkness of the night.
