Chapter Text
“Welcome to the land I’m supposedly king of!” Sonic flourished, dragging Shadow around by his hand as the hybrid stared with wide eyes at the new location.
It took some fussing and time, but Sonic had eventually found his way back into the storybook realm, excited to see his old friends and check up on the kingdom that he’d left behind. It was in good hands, and while Sonic was never cut out to be king of anything, he still thought about the place a lot. That’s why he decided to drag Shadow along, he wanted someone else to see the magic of this new realm as well as keep him responsible for going back to their own world. Knowing himself, Sonic knew that he’d get overwhelmed with the amount of attention and needed someone to say ‘no’ for him sometimes.
But now that he was back, breathing in the crisp air and walking along the cobbled streets, Sonic felt almost giddy. There was a skip in his step as his mouth started moving a mile a minute, pointing out both citizens and locations to babble about their purposes. Shadow allowed himself to be dragged along, his rocket boots scraping loudly on the brick if he forgot to pick up his feet. It was certainly a new environment- medieval being the only way to describe the almost dull colored atmosphere. But the air was fresh, and the faces looked polite enough. In Sonic’s eyes, it was just another place to explore, there was no wonder the hero liked it so much. Why they elected him as king though was a mystery Shadow had yet to understand.
Sonic leaned in, bumping Shadow’s side playfully, “If people stare at ya, don’t worry about it. It’s gonna happen a lot.” He whispered, squeezing Shadow’s hand before pulling away to a random stall where an alluring aroma was wafting from.
“Hello! May I get two of those?” Sonic greeted the vender, pointing at what looked like a pile of steaming pastries that were being sold. Shadow was about to question Sonic and ask what money he was planning to use to buy such things, but the vendor beat him too it.
With big eyes the vendor started stuttering out of shock, “Y-your majesty, I wasn’t aware that you’d returned! H-here, just two?” The vendor fumbled around before looking up, meeting Shadow’s eyes briefly before nearly dropping one of the pastries. “S-sir.” He politely acknowledged Shadow, hastily packing the food in paper before handing it off with a bow. “Please enjoy.” He bowed a second time when Sonic took the food, the hero smiling but also looking a little uncomfortable.
Other’s eyes were starting to draw to them, hushed whispers rushing through the village.
“He’s back? The king is back?”
“Who’s that with him? Shouldn’t he have knight at his side?”
“So casual, his majesty never changes.”
“I’ve never seen one of his knights without armor before-“
“C’mon, lets go.” Sonic chimed, grabbing Shadow’s hand and speeding them out of the village. Shadow was thankful to get out of the spotlight, everyone’s attention confusing him. He understood the attention on Sonic, but on himself? Not so much.
They thankfully ended up a little way away, in a large clearing where Sonic fell back into plush grass with a smile. “I seriously didn’t think I’d miss this place so much.” He moaned, taking a deep breath and inhaling the soft scent of the dirt and grass. “It’s gonna take a moment to get used to it all again, but everyone seems happy to see me so far, right?”
Shadow nodded and hesitantly sat himself down in the grass as well, the long strands tickling his fur. Sonic extended out a pastry towards him, chowing down on his own like a starving man. Shadow took his and took a bite. It wasn’t sweet like he’d expected it to be- usually pastry was filled with cream or fruit, but this was dense, filled with soft potatoes and meat. It was decent, albite a little bland, but designed to be filling. He ate his slowly while Sonic’s was gone in a matter of minutes, juices stuck to the side of his muzzle as he melted into the grass.
Shadow could stop himself from leaning over, using his gloved thumb to wipe it away. “You’re a mess.” He mumbled, scrubbing the side of Sonic’s mouth less than gently to get rid of the staining.
Sonic beamed at him before getting that mischievous twinkle in his eyes. He looked around quickly for any prying eyes before fisting his hand in Shadow’s chest fur and yanking him down. Their lips met messily, their noses smashing together from the force of the pull. Sonic laughed, their teeth scraping accidentally before Shadow was able to pull it all together, settling into a deep and affectionate kiss. One that was usually saved for private occasions, but out here in a new realm in an empty field, it almost felt a little too perfect.
Sonic’s fist curled tighter in his fur, his other arm reaching up to curl around Shadow’s neck. He managed to roll, flipping their positions and settling his weight on Shadow’s body. Sonic pressed the kiss deeper, drawing a groan from his partner which he smiled dumbly at. He hardly gave Shadow room to breathe, switching between invading his mouth with a wondering tongue or nipping at his lips, Shadow had no choice but to take it. If they weren’t so exposed, Shadow would have been happy to let Sonic do whatever he wanted, but they were still next to a road and their solitude didn’t last forever.
“Your majesty?” A familiar, poised voice called. Sonic’s head bolted up and he twisted around, beaming at the newcomer.
“Percival! Hey, guess who’s back for a bit!” Sonic cheered.
Shadow sat up slowly, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand to cover his puffy lips. He froze mid move, now seeing the elaborately armored cat atop a horse, an empty cart behind her. But the true shock was that despite the visor covering her face, it was shockingly obvious whom she was the counterpart of.
“It’s dangerous for you to be fraternizing out here, especially having just returned. Come, I’ll get you to the castle- oh.” Her head tilted towards Shadow, her poised instructions pausing as she looked him up and down. Shadow felt, exposed. “My apologies, I didn’t know-“
“Different guy, Perci.” Sonic laughed, “Don’t mind him. This is Shadow, and Shadow, this is Sir Percival. She’s if Blaze had a sword and wasn’t a queen.”
Percival seemed offput by that greeting, but not anymore than she seemed by Shadow. The rigidity of her movements in her armor was all Shadow needed to see to tell that she was uncomfortable. “Right, of course. Pleasure to meet you, Sir Shadow.”
“Nah, he’s just Shadow.” Sonic corrected, standing up and urging Shadow to follow. “A ride to castle would be appreciated though. We can sit in the back.” He winked, hopping into the wooden cart before the knight could argue. She sighed resignedly but didn’t bother to correct his actions, instead waiting for Shadow to slowly get up and join Sonic on the back of the cart.
The cart started down the bumpy road, the two sitting in silence before Shadow spoke up. “We can’t do that again.”
“Hm? Do what?”
Shadow shot him a glare. “You know what I’m talking about, Sonic. If everyone is going to act so strangely to me than I don’t want to solely be known as the king’s whore.” He muttered, feeling his face heat. “You have a reputation here, and you even told me that you were fucking someone. Yes, it was before we properly became a thing, but I want to stay out of medieval lovers’ quarrels.”
Sonic looked at him shocked before stifling a laugh. “Dude, I promise that is not what’s going to happen. You’re being paranoid.”
“I’m being paranoid? You’re the king in this world. I am the outsider, isn’t that a little suspicious to bring a stranger in only to be immediately seen feeling them up within the first hour of you being back?”
“I don’t really care, Shadow.” Sonic admitted, “I’d do it again without hesitation, too.” His hand inched its way over to Shadow’s thigh, the hybrid slapping it away with a growl.
“Stop it.”
The rest of the ride continued with little trouble, Sonic twisting around to talk to Percival about how his time away had been. Shadow half listened, all the towns and names seeming blend together with their unfamiliarity. Shockingly, Sonic knew it all, responding within a beat and already trying to workshop the few problems that arose. It was shocking to see Sonic take the initiative with such a large matter, but it only just made the time he spent here more prevalent. It was obvious in the way he held himself, still proud but no longer laced with cockiness. His tone changed as well as his way of talking, no longer painfully causal and friendly, instead adopting a more polite manner that creeped into the accent that was used here.
Sonic prided himself on his freedom, never wanting to be tied down or in charge. That was something that made Sonic name to be known. Because while he was a hero and would do whatever he could to save the world, he wasn’t endlessly devoted to every mishap. Hearing the events and the small troubles being presented, Sonic immediately jumped to work asking about other individuals and trying to get his timeline straight. Shadow almost couldn’t believe it, but it seemed like Sonic quite possibly was a good ruler.
While he tuned out the technical talk, Shadow had to watch as they rolled into town, the large castle looming over them. Citizens paused seeing Percival, offering a polite nod and occasional wave towards the knight. But when they saw the bright blue hedgehog in the back, their expressions changed from shock to excitement, immediately rushing to go tell the next person. They eyed Shadow with confusion briefly before going back to their tasks, sometimes doing a double take before ceasing to care. It was weird. He had no idea what to make of it.
The cart rolled through the front gates, Percival taking them to the entrance before wishing them both well with a bow of her head. Sonic hoped off the cart and stretched, shouting out thanks as she rode away. “She’s cool.” Sonic smiled, nodding for Shadow to follow as he approached the large doors. Already Shadow had been feeling out of place, but this was just absurd. How his partner managed to be the king of a real living, breathing kingdom was appalling on paper, but now that he was here… he didn’t know what to think.
Sonic opened the doors with a flourish, walking in like he’d never left in the first place.
Staff and guards quickly moved out the way, bowing vigorously and offering greetings and their services, all to which Sonic smiled and waved at. Shadow, on the other hand, felt like an animal trapped behind glass.
Sonic ignored the grand doors that sat before them, instead Sonic weaving them down the hallways. At every turn a new face would pop up and praise Sonic, the attention overwhelming. Just as Shadow thought they’d reached a quiet part of the palace, something else came up.
“Your majesty!” Yet another familiar voice boomed from down the hall. They turned to see a red echidna, decked out in similar ornate armor like Percival had been, storming down the hall. At least it made sense for Knuckles to be a knight, but it was laughable to think of their world’s Knuckles bowing before Sonic for anything.
“That’s Sir Gawain.” Sonic whispered as the Knight marched closer, his eyes locked in Sonic.
“Your majesty, we were unaware that you’d be returning-“ He started to speak before his eyes found Shadow’s. Much like Percival’s reaction, Gawain looked like his eyes were about to bug out of his head from behind his visor. “What are you doing-“ He began to hiss, staring appalled at Shadow. The hybrid didn’t even get a chance to speak before Sonic was pulling the reins again.
“Hey Gawain! Been a while! This is my friend, Shadow. Shadow, this is Gawain.” Damage control at it’s finest. A basic, uninformative introduction.
Gawain tripped over his words, looking between a stoic (and horribly confused) Shadow and an over gleeful Sonic. “…Shadow?” He rolled the word around in his mouth. He leaned in closer to the pair, “I am well acquainted with your jokes by now, my king, but you-“ He met Shadow’s eyes with a vengeance, “You’re still on duty.”
“Woah, woah, calm down.” Sonic pushed Gawain away, giving them a bit of distance. “This is Shadow from my world, you two don’t know each other. I promise!”
Gawain bristled, “Would you consider it treason if I were to call you a liar?”
“Yes, because I’m not lying. C’mon Gawain, I know you’re happy to see me but calm down.” Sonic rolled his eyes. “This is Shadow, and only Shadow. No tricks. Go find Lance and see for yourself, okay big guy?”
Gawain leveled Shadow with one last piercing look before bowing deeply to Sonic and stomping past them and down the hall. Sonic let out a dramatic sigh of relief, ignoring how Shadow was staring into the side of his head awaiting answers. “Welp, that could have gone a lot worse. Did you know I had to fight him?” Sonic started delving into the story as he dragged Shadow down the opposite hall. “He was super difficult too, as to be expected from any Knuckles variant.” He chuckled, “But once I finally beat him, he got super dramatic and talked about killing himself because he was now ‘useless’ or something.”
“Or something?” Shadow frowned.
“It was a long time ago. I just remember being annoyed.” Sonic shrugged, there’s a lot of drama in this world, you’ll figure that out real fast. Now c’mon, I gotta find Merlina.”
“Who’s Merlina?”
“Eh, long story. She’s been covering for me while I’ve been gone along with Caliborn. She’s overdue for a break.” Sonic smiled, glancing through the empty hall and grasping Shadow’s hand. “Then you get to play royalty with me for a bit.”
Shadow rubbed his thumb over Sonic’s knuckles. “So, you are going to resume your position for a while. I wasn’t sure.”
“Just for a bit, it’s only right. I did kind of kill their king, save their realm, get appointed as the new king, and then dip. I should probably stick around for a little as an apology just so the people know they didn’t hire a complete deadbeat.”
Shadow hummed in response, just in time for a maid to rush down the hall and Sonic to take his hand back. Luckily, she paid no attention to them, but Sonic kept his hands to himself. Despite his reservations, Shadow couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed about it.
They turned and Sonic beelined towards a set of smaller, yet beautifully carved doors. He swung them open, showing a well used room with a human woman standing in it. She was leaning over a table covered with maps before her head shot up from the intrusion.
“Sonic! Your majesty, you’re back!” She beamed, looking delighted to see the hero had returned. What Shadow hadn’t expected was for her to speak to him next. “Oh, Sir Lan-“
“Hi, yes! I’m back!” Sonic interrupted, “This is Shadow! Shadow the hedgehog, he’s from my world and he’ll be with me while I’m here.” He raised Shadow’s hand, forcing him to waive before the hybrid yanked his arm back.
“What are you doing?” Shadow hissed, only to be dutifully ignored.
“Shadow, meet Merlina and Caliborn.” He introduced. Shadow was quickly noticing that same repeatedly confused expression on Merlina’s face that he’d seen on everyone else. What was going on? To make things even weirder, a second voice came from behind Merlina, the girl stepping aside to show an ornate sword resting against the wall.
It had a… face?
“Hello, Knave Hedgehog.” It greeted, Sonic rolling his eyes and groaning.
“Thought we got over that, bud.” He huffed.
Shadow was just as confused as ever, no explanations being given before Sonic dove into a conversation with the two. Half of it went over Shadow’s head, naturally as he was unfamiliar with the locations and people being spoken of. He tried to keep up, but eventually found that it wasn’t worth it. He soon got bored and started to look through the maps and books that were scattered about the room. The fur prickling on his back was enough to know he was being watched, the sword’s eyes on him wherever he moved.
It was bizarre, but this was a fairytale realm after all. Shadow was finding that he wasn’t the hugest fan of it.
Eventually, his attention cycled back to the conversation at hand, immediately recognizing the irritated glint in Sonic’s tone as he replied to the human.
“There’s really no need for that-“
“Sonic.” Merlina scolded, shaking her head with a furrow in her brow. “Its customary, you remember.”
“And you guys also know from firsthand experience that I don’t need a bodyguard. I can take care of myself!”
“Then don’t think of him as a bodyguard, think of him as an assistant. I remember you being fond of Sir Lancelot, for reasons I am…beginning to understand more.”
“That’s the reason why I don’t want him there.” Sonic scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest. “Literally anyone else.”
Merlina opened her mouth to argue before snapping it shut and taking a deep breath. “I’m sorry, but as I said, it’s customary. A requirement as King. You didn’t have any problems with him last time if I recall.”
Sonic tapped his foot, Shadow carefully watching his partner as the tips of his ears turned pink. Embarrassment? “Fine.” He groaned, glancing at Shadow and nodding towards the door. “Let’s get the awkward shit over with then.” Sonic stomped towards the door, leaving Shadow no choice but to follow, offering a nod to the room’s occupants before shutting the doors behind him.
Sonic chose not to speak, muzzle screwed up in thought as they wandered through the halls. Shadow wanted to ask what was causing Sonic’s brow to furrow so much, the knot between his eyes strange on his usually relaxed face. “Who’s Lancelot?” Shadow decided it was better to ask now rather than waiting, especially with how much the name had been uttered already.
The pink returned to Sonic’s ears, green eyes shyly glancing at him before the hero sighed and slumped against the wall, nearly disturbing a painting the process. “So, uh. You know how I had some… relations, while I was here, right?” He started sheepishly.
Shadow’s eyes widened as realization dawned. “You were fucking your knight?” He asked, his voice hushed but no less appalled.
Sonic laughed nervously, offering an apologetic smile. “Uh, it’s worse than that, actually. But c’mon, I have needs! And he was close and, just, other things.” Sonic fumbled through his explanation, progressively getting quieter. His teeth chewed into his bottom lip, “This is going to be so awkward.”
“Really? I hadn’t guessed.” Shadow deadpanned, “You really like digging holes for yourself hedgehog.”
“You have no idea.” Sonic groaned.
The pair quickly reached that beginning set of tall carved doors. Intricate designs were scrawled into them, depicting great wars and heroes throughout time. The craftsmanship was gorgeous, Shadow quickly getting lost in the carvings while Sonic stared up at them begrudgingly. Two guards stood on either side of the door, postured straight and tense, their hands on the door handles, posed to let them in. Shadow looked over at his partner, not missing how his furrowed expression had yet to ease. “Are you okay?” Shadow asked in a hushed voice, leaning closer but not daring to touch. Sonic glanced at him and then the doors before his expression hardened. Next thing Shadow knew, their hands were connected, and Shadow was being dragged down the hall.
He didn’t even have time to ask where they were going before Sonic led them through yet another set of carved doors. The moment the doors closed, Shadow was being pressed against them, Sonic’s lips on his.
The kisses were hungry, possessive. The force bruising and messy as Sonic ripped his gloves off and dragged his bare palms against Shadow’s body. They brushed over his chest, down his ribs, caressed his stomach and gripped at his waist. All tugging Shadow closer to squish their bodies together, Sonic’s lips never leaving his. Shadow followed blindly, a moan stuck in his throat as he reciprocated Sonic’s harsh kisses, trying to slow them down only for Sonic’s tongue to slip into his mouth. Shadow’s breath left his lungs as he grappled for purchase, hands similarly fluttering over Sonic’s body, gripping his waist briefly before sneaking up to wrap around Sonic’s neck, pulling them closer.
“What is going on?” Shadow gasped against his lips, using the brief break to try and gather his bearings. Sonic pretended to not hear him, his lips trailing down Shadow’s jaw to his neck, nipping playfully at the skin. He licked a stripe up his neck, displacing black fur to press his lips to the spot and suck a harsh hickey that caused Shadow’s knees to buckle. “Sonic-“ He groaned, half a moan, half trying to get the other’s attention. Hands continued to wander, leaving Shadow’s waist and falling down to grope his butt, squeezing tightly before a hand trailed farther and tucked under his tail, pressing at the pucker below-
“Sonic.” Shadow growled, shoving Sonic away and watching the hero blindly stumble back. Shadow stayed pressed against the door, face flushed and breathing heavily. His tail tucked down between his legs, less out of the safety and more for his own security. There was no denying the heat pooling in his belly, but usually Sonic cornering him like that meant nothing good. “What is this.” He asked, his breathlessness betraying him.
“Can I eat you out?” Sonic asked, his eyes wide and lust blown, taking Shadow aback.
“What?” Shadow questioned. Sonic back up into the desk in the middle of the room, pushing books and papers aside and patting the smooth wood.
“Please?”
Shadow blinked, opening and closing his mouth uselessly as he tried to think. Now given space, he realized that he was in an office of some sort. The desk large and heavy, covered in papers that seemed poorly organized. The walls were lined with books and in the corner were plush couches and an unlit fireplace. Everything seemed to be coated in a fine layer of dust, obviously not touched in a while. “Why.” Shadow breathed.
Sonic paused, staring at Shadow confused, as if he hadn’t expected the resistance. He stepped back up to the door, grasping Shadow’s hand before slowly, finger by finger, removing the thick glove. He stripped one glove, and then the other, each falling to the floor with a muted thud. He locked their hands and tugged Shadow away from the door, staring deep into his eyes with a seriousness that was as terrifying as it was enticing. “Because I want to taste you.” He simply replied, leading Shadow to the desk and pushing him to sit on it.
Shadow blindly followed, unable to repress the shiver that rushed through him at Sonic’s unabashed honestly. He felt the fight drain from his body as he sat up on the cool desk, quietly spreading his legs and watching Sonic kneel in front of him. “Comfy?” He asked. Shadow nodded, swallowing down his words in favor of watching peach hands run up his thighs. Fuck, Sonic always managed to do this. Strip him of dignity and voice and leave him desperate and willing. And every single time, Shadow submitted to it. “You’re tense.” Sonic commented, nuzzling into Shadow’s thigh and squeezing at his muscles. “Sorry, I know you’re not a fan of this place.”
“It’s new.” Shadow quietly replied. “You’re keeping things from me, I know you are.”
Sonic leaned in and licked Shadow’s slit, wetting the thick fur and forcing it to part to reveal soft, wet, lips that he immediately dived into. It was Shadow’s own fault for getting aroused so quickly, allowing Sonic to get in with little trouble- but goddamn if he wasn’t mad that Sonic was using this as an excuse to avoid his questions. Sonic hated confrontation and unfortunately for Shadow, that meant that Sonic would probably wring at least four orgasms out of him before providing any substantial information. Shadow choked on a groan, hissing out an unserious “I hate you” before succumbing to the pleasure.
For someone who was always talking, it made sense that Sonic was good with his mouth, even if Shadow really didn’t want to admit it. He hooked one of Shadow’s thighs over his shoulder, pressing face in deeper to lap at sensitive folds. Shadow squirmed, throwing his head back to avoid staring between his legs. If he did then he’d surely start whimpering. Instead, his hand weaved in between Sonic’s quills, pressing them closer together. Sonic’s tongue breached him gently, dipping in and then out at a cruel speed. Too slow to derive any real pleasure, but the drag of his tongue made Shadow flush- acutely aware of his current position. He tightened his grip, tugging, a silent command for Sonic to go faster. The hero laughed, hot breath brushing him, but he complied. His lips kissed Shadow’s entrance as his tongue dipped deeper. His nose brushed his clit, causing Shadow’s hips to buck- in turn, Sonic was able to hit his sweet spot, licking and abusing it until Shadow fell into a stuttering orgasm. Shadow groaned, fisting his hand before relaxing it and petting over Sonic’s ears. The triangles twitched in response while Sonic continued to slowly move his lips across Shadow’s sex. It was painfully intimate, the soft affection paired with Shadow’s relaxing body making him feel vulnerable and exposed. But that was the norm when with Sonic. Somehow the hero always managed to rip his walls down one by one.
Sonic started mumbling, whining between Shadow’s legs before pushing Shadow’s leg off and himself up, pressing their mouths together. Sonic’s thumbs rubbed small circles into Shadow’s fur while he transferred Shadow’s taste into his own mouth. “I love you.” Sonic murmured, soft, but no less genuine. Shadow’s heart stuttered, a quick skip at the simple words only for Sonic to repeat them again and again. Like a chant, like a prayer. “I love you.”
It was very rare that they were so verbally affectionate, the words difficult to form for them both. As much as Shadow would love to yell his affection, Sonic was always more detached from verbal affirmations. He preferred physical, whether fighting or fucking, he’d rather do other things with his mouth than utter those three words. But now, Shadow was experiencing an onslaught. Unable to even reply as Sonic continued to whisper between sweet, lingering kisses.
“I don’t say it enough, but I love you.” Sonic smiled, stumbling over his words with a soft laugh. His eyes met his, green glowing in the dimming light. Shadow unwillingly bucked his hips, embarrassingly brought back closer to the edge by those words. They made his heart accelerate and his heat increase, arousal threatening to leak out onto the desk. Predictably, Sonic knew exactly what he was doing. A hand left his thigh, letting two fingers wipe through his mess to press deep inside of him. They quirked upwards, pulling in gentle waves that had Shadow gasping for breath. One last kiss was pressed to the corner of his lips before Sonic’s head was between his legs again, attacking his swollen clit with a vengeance that had Shadow denting teeth marks into his bottom lip.
His hips were stuttering, his breath coming out in labored pants- he was close. So close. The words were on his tongue, begging to be spoken into the air. “I-I,” He started, watching Sonic’s ears perk up. “S-sonic, I-“
A quick, rapid series of knocks fell on the door.
Both hedgehogs froze, stuck in a compromising position as a horrifyingly familiar voice came muffled from behind the very unlocked doors. “My lord?” It asked, the door was being pushed open.
In that moment Shadow did the only thing he could think of- which was kicking Sonic away from him and slamming his thighs together. Sonic was sent to the floor, his back hitting the ground with a quiet “oof”. The hero tipped his head back just in time for another knight to appear in the doorway.
Elaborate armor, a visor covering most of his face, and jet black quills with red stripes-
What the fuck.
“H-hey, Lance. Long time no see?” Sonic smiled, sheepishly greeting the knight and very much pretending like his muzzle and hands weren’t matted with Shadow’s arousal. For Shadow, that arousal was quickly being replaced with horror, and then anger as he stared at the copycat in the doorway. This was Sir Lancelot?
The knight leveled Sonic with an exhausted sigh, one that was so familiar yet uncanny to hear from another mouth. “It’s unbecoming for a king to be on his knees, let alone, sprawled out on the ground. This was not where I expected to find you-“ His head tilted up, finally noticing Shadow, white knuckling the desk. “Oh.” He spoke. “Oh.” Shadow could practically see how the knight tensed up upon realizing, their expressions nearly mirrored save for the simmering anger that was certainly on his own face. “My apologies, I’ll wait outside.”
The door shut behind him, the knight leaving as quickly as he appeared. Under the door, the shadow of his shoes were all that remained. Stationed, waiting. Doing his job.
Shadow looked down at Sonic who was still sprawled across the floor, eyes eventually finding his own. If the look on Sonic’s face was any indication, the hero knew this was going to happen. “It can’t be treason if I’m not from this world.” Was the first thing Shadow uttered, venom dripping from his lips. Sonic had the gal to laugh, nervously, but it was still a giggle that Shadow was not willing to deal with. “I can’t believe you.” Shadow growled, keeping his voice hushed as he hopped off the desk, now disgusted by the dampness between his legs. “You knew this entire time who he was, and you didn’t bother to tell me? That’s who you were fucking? The copy of me?” He was angry and humiliated, on the verge of tears while also feeling nothing. Sonic scrambled off the floor, holding his hands up in surrender.
“Shadow, I swear, I didn’t plan this.”
“I don’t care that you didn’t plan this! Maybe you’re indifferent to being walked in on by an alternate version of yourself, but I’m not. Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because you’d do this?”
Shadow’s expression twitched, a low warning growl leaving his chest at the nerve. “You’re a fucking idiot.” He shoved past Sonic, ignoring his protests as he scooped his gloves off the ground and pushed the door open with more force than necessary. It slammed against the wall loudly, the knight positioned outside weirdly not bothered. Shadow ignored him, simply stomping past before breaking into a run to get out of the castle as fast as he could.
He needed air.
