Regulus sent the files to James when he was pretty sure that he was asleep. He was on the flight back to London after having finalized the album. It was two AM in London.
And yet, one minute later, he was bombarded by messages.

“On a scale from Today Was A Fairytale to Wildest Dreams, how bad is this one going to be?”
“If you thought Wildest Dreams was bad…”
Sirius made a disgusted face, sighing. “Am I going to want to throw up?”
“Oh, no, definitely not,” Regulus replied, a bit too casually.
Sirius narrowed his eyes. “James?”
“...Yes?”
“Am I going to have to murder you?”
“Uh-”
“ No one is going to murder anyone,” Remus cut in, “Really, Sirius, it’s fine. I liked the song.”
Sirius really hoped that Remus wouldn’t lie to him. Either way, he clicked play and put his headphones in.
He had heard the first three singles - Look What You Made Me Do,…Ready For it?, and Gorgeous. They weren’t that bad. He actually really enjoyed them from a musical standpoint, and he would enjoy the lyrics if he just forgot that they were about his brother and his best friend. Of course, Look What You Made Me Do was the exception from that, automatically making it his favorite so far.
Either way, he also had to listen to the album, which had just been finished. So…
He liked End Game, and definitely liked I Did Something Bad and Don’t Blame Me (once again ignoring that it was his brother). Then Delicate started.
“Dive bar on the East Side, where you at? Phone lights up my nightstand in the black.”
“Wait, when was this?” Sirius blinked. He really hoped-
“End of August.”
Ah. So, the one-night stand. He did not need to know the details.
“Long night with your hands up in my hair, echoes of your footsteps on the stairs. Stay here, honey, I don't wanna share.”
But he was getting them anyway.
“Hey, what the fuck?” Sirius paused. Echoes of your footsteps on the stairs . His eyes met James’. “You left him?”
James froze. “We had a flight in the morning.”
“But-”
“Keep listening,” Regulus rolled his eyes.
Then came So It Goes… and Sirius refused to listen to the whole thing after “Gold cage, hostage to my feelings / Back against the wall.”
Regulus was laughing, which Sirius found incredibly unfair, but he pushed through it. He found that he actually really liked Getaway Car, King Of My Heart , and Dancing With Our Hands Tied .
Best Friend on the other hand…
“What the actual fuck ?” Sirius ripped the headphones out of his ears, “There is no way I’m listening to that. Why would you-”
James had turned a bright red, and Sirius put in the headphones again just to hear “-silence and patience, pining and desperately waiting-” and that was enough for James to get the message and start running.
It was later in the day when he eventually finished the album, and he couldn’t even lie and say that he wasn’t touched by Regulus mentioning him in This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things . He knew that he had mentioned Sirius in a few songs in the past, but those lyrics had always been cut out for obvious reasons.
And, well. Call It What You Wan t and New Year’s Day were… soft. It was so unlike anything that he had heard from Regulus - the entire album was, honestly. It wasn’t what he expected, honestly, but it made him happy. He was glad that he and James had found each other.

As much as James wanted to, they couldn’t go to every show. They decided on going to the New York shows and London, because those also fit in with his schedule. He was also at opening night, but from backstage - he didn’t want to attract too much attention.
Either way, London was when they would be joining Regulus on stage with the rest of the Marauders. But from wherever he was watching - in the VIP tent, backstage, or on stage - nothing could ever take his eyes off Regulus while he was performing.
It was easily his favorite part about Regulus being on tour. James got to interact with fans before the show, and then watch Regulus all night, catch his eyes throughout the performance whenever Regulus could spare a glance, and then he would only have to wait a few hours while Regulus went to the Rep Room before he got Regulus to himself.
He would gladly follow Regulus all over the world if he could, and he knew Regulus felt the same - whenever there was a chance in their schedules, he’d be on the first plane to wherever James was.

James waited backstage, eyeing the camera in the corner of his eyes. They were recording for a documentary, but also just some behind the scenes. Sirius had already left to the hotel, and they’d all meet up later that day.
It didn’t take long as the music was finishing on stage, and then he saw the cameras switch angles, and-
There was Regulus.
James felt himself smile absently, and then Regulus noticed him, his hair and clothes slightly wet from the fountain on stage. James was walking over, and Regulus began to run, and then Regulus’ arms were wrapped around James’ neck.
James only spared one glance at the camera before kissing Regulus’ hair, and listening to Regulus as he began murmuring about the crowd, and the documentary, and, “I wish I could’ve seen you throughout the show.”
Well, James got to see him the whole night. And he knew that even when James was backstage or not in the same state or country, Regulus was singing about him. Everyone out in that crowd knew it as well.
