Chapter Text

“Do you know who am I, Son of Kronos?”

Sea Green eyes widens at the visage of goddess with ebony hair wafting in the current.

“I am one of Five Rivers of Underworld. The one that souls must cross over by Charon’s Boat to reach the Underworld itself.”

“I am the River of Hatred.”

“I am Styx.”

Poseidon become standstill like a statue. Something tightens in his chest. Shaking him to the core.

“Do you know what my name means, o Earthshaker? It means “shuddering”. As in Loathing in Death.”

The goddess float closer. Her obsidian eyes gleams with absolute hatred.

“I am the one that watch the immortals with hatred filled eyes. I am the one who hate the world and its ugliness. The one that scorn arrogance and foolishness. That laugh mockingly at naivety. The one that resents cowardice, weak willed, and hubris all the same. I am the one that burning ablaze with hatred with every promise spoken, vow whispered, that lies broken and shattered. The one that incessant with rage at shattered oath.”

Sharp nails dig at Poseidon’s cheek. “Oath spoken in my name. I preside over them. Those, I am very firm in enforcing. With all the hate in my current. In every wave and flow of MY river.”

“I am Hate incarnate. All the hate that ever been. The currents that swept you away until you can only see red of rage that torn your voice and burns your mind, body, and soul until nothing is left behind. The hate that torn the world asunder, that broke nations, that shape vengeance, that shape justice. The hate that gives birth to Zeal itself, that carry Force and Strength that paved way for Victory.

I am the Hate that strips away immortality. I am the Hate that banish foolish, arrogant gods from their glorious palace and domains. I am Oath. I am the Hate that Binds.”

A sardonic smile played on her lips.

A smile full of hatred and promise of suffering. A Fate worse than Death itself.

“Alas. In recent years, it had been risky for me to enforce MY oath in the proper way. And you know what it means?”

Fear.

That was the only thing Poseidon can feel.

“It means people had forgotten.

It means her name had become mere cautionary tales. It means the mortal had forget why they avoid of speaking her name in fear of drawing her hatred filled gaze to them.

It means the immortal had forgot the true consequences of breaking MY oath. Thinking they could get away with minimum consequences.”

The hand went south. Firmly attached to the Sea God’s neck, with its pair joining in. Squeezing in and choking Poseidon.

“My Oath, o Stormbringer. I DESPISE of seeing people, mortals and immortals alike, swearing by my name and breaking it with thought that they can get away with it. I LOATHE of being treated as mere horror story without substance.”

She pulls Poseidon closer, whispering to his ear.

Her voice is like nail scratched across the board. The painful truth that no one want to hear. The voice that dripping with hate. That incites hate and fear.

“Do you know why things deteriorate to this point? It’s because I let them be.”

She yanks him away, her grip firmly choking the God, as she laughed.

It’s broken and terrifying in way Poseidon cannot even begin to imagine. Much less prepare himself to hear it with his own wars.

“No more. You Foolish Son of Kronos. No more will I be treated with disrespect. No more I let MY oath broken over and over without consequences.”

Her hatred filled eyes freeze Poseidon as she gave one strong squeeze. His vision starts to blackens due lack of oxygen supply

(he is a god he doesn’t have to breathe but why this hurts why he feels the need to breathe and if he doesn’t he will die?

He cannot die

Right?)

“Hear my curse, Son of Kronos! The Punishment! Is begin!”

And Poseidon

Lost

Consciousness.

.

When he come to awareness, Poseidon’s world is filled with pain.

He feels weak. So, so, so weak. His body aching all over as if Typhoon had beaten him into submission. His lungs are constricted and every breath of air hurts. The sands and rocks dig to his skin. The wave that lapping on his skin is cold and uncomfortable.

His palm snagged over a sharp, jagged edge of a rock and the pain nearly made Poseidon blackens out. Again.

(It was just a cut

So why it hurts so badly?)

“Oh, husband.”

Poseidon looks up.

Amphitrite and Hades are looking down at him.

Their faces are picture of horror.

“Poseidon. What have you done?

Poseidon shivers when his mind played a hatred-filled curse.

“I will not be crossed again! Let it be nigh time for the world to remember my hatred!

Hear my voice, Son of Kronos! I damned you to Punishment of Old! I Curse you to Ten Years of Damnation! This is your punishment!”

In the seaside of that cold morning, Poseidon lays on the beach. Weak and in pain as a large part of him was torn apart.

His palm is bleeding.

Red.

Not gold. Red.

On his throat, circling around his neck, was a tattoo of the darkest night. Taking shape in mix of wave and a handprint.

Proof of damnation.

Mark for the Sinner of Broken Oath.

Notes:

I read somewhere if gods broke Oath on Styx name, they suffered a severe punishment: they were forced to drink from the river and had to go without ambrosia and nectar, the food of the gods, for a year; after this time, the oath-breaker was forbidden to attend the gathering of gods for nine years.

which, interesting. and Make me bit of miffed that Canon never show us the consequence of breaking the Oath for gods.
