Work Text:

Absquatulate- to leave without saying goodbye

The cool breeze from the open window causes me to shiver slightly, holding my green sweater closer to me.

It's been five months since Kya left to travel the world. Five months since she left without telling me anything.

Kya has sent letter after letter, but I refuse to reply to them. Why would I?

Every letter is stored away in a drawer near Kya's (used to be) side of the bed. Week after week the stack grows bigger with a new topic on each piece every time.

It's a shame to miss someone who could leave anytime without saying a word. I thought we were doing so well.

She decided to move in with me not long after we started dating. She made me feel alive, but I guess I didn't have that same affect on her after all.

I remember the day she left. The sound of the lock latching replays in my mind everytime I think of her.

She only left behind a few items leaving me with the thought that she won't be coming back.

I hate her. I hate her so much. I neatly fold her clothes and place them in a box with her name written on the outside.

I plan for the box to go into the closest of the guest bedroom no one uses along with all her other left behind belongings.

I feel my eyes well up with tears as I tape the box shut.

The phone rings. The shrilling sound fills my ears and I quickly walk over to it before picking it up and greeting the person on the other side a bit gruffly.

"Hi Lin" the person answers back quickly in a soft tone. It's her.

She sounds the same as when she left. Of course she does, it's only been a few months.

Why would she call me now? After all this time. "Lin?" She asks, looking for me to answer her back.

No, no I won't. If I can't get a simple goodbye then she can't get a hello. It's not fair, she's not fair.

"Lin, please say something." Why is it always me that gets left behind?

"Lin come on please say something, anything!" She says to me, but it's different. Is she crying? Why is she crying, shouldn't I be the one crying right now?

Spirits she's always been so damn emotional. "Can I help you with something?" I finally reply in an irritated tone.

"I- I just wanted to talk to you." There it is again. The empathetic tone she always uses to get her way.

It won't work, not this time at least. "About what Kya?" I ask, rubbing my temples frustratingly.

"I'm sorry Lin, I didn't wanna leave without saying anything but I knew you would be heartbroken if I told you I was planning on leaving." She tries to reason sympathetically.

Oh I'm livid now. Is she really trying to justify her actions? "No, no." I say to her.

"Hm? No what, Lin?" She questions searching for an answer. "No, you don't get to just call out of the blue and ask for my forgiveness after what? Five whole months!" The tears from earlier finally spill. Tears fall down both my cheeks onto the floor below me.

"It's not fair Kya, if I did this to you I would be in the wrong and you know it. How hard would it have been to leave me a note before you left or something of the sort? You just up and left me like everyone else I cared about has." I conclude finally letting everything off my chest.

"Lin wait I-" I refuse to let her finish. It's not as if she can take back what she's done. The call ends. I put the receiver down before sitting down on the couch.

"Why do people always leave me without saying goodbye?"
