Alew- a cry of despair
The air is thick and suffocating. The simple act of taking a deep breath would jeopardize everything.
The deafening cries of children and adults could be heard from miles away from the scene.
The blaring sounds of sirens filled her ears as she weakly held onto the crumbling wall. The effects of the absurd amounts of explosions evident on her small figure.
Her knees were weak and her chest felt heavy. Every step was painful, and so was every breath.
She just wanted to save one last person, anyone would do. The metal bender spots a small boy. His body is lying limply against a pillar, his leg stuck under a large piece of rubble.
Lin timidly reached down to check his pulse. It's slow but steady, he has a fighting chance. She slowly bends the piece of rubble off of his bruised leg before carefully lifting him up into her tired arms.
She can see it. The dim light of the sun peeking through the dense smoke causes a small smile to appear on her lips.
"We'll make it out, I'm sure of it." She says to herself encouragingly while taking steady steps.
Again. It happens again. The sunlight ahead is quickly covered by a mix of rubble and smoke. An obnoxious shilling sound fills Lin's ears.
Materials of all sizes fall from above the two injuring them even further. Lin falls down to her knees, clutching the boy closer to her chest.
They won't make it out. She's sure of it now. Her eyes welled up with tears. She's failed him, she's failed everyone in the building. "What if they were counting on her?" She wonders silently leaning her head against the barley standing wall.
The desperate cries of the ones around her finally cease. The last sound heard was the cry of despair from Lin Beifong before the large building started to crumble.
The sound could be heard from miles away.
