Work Text:
The morning after their first time making love, Peeta awakes to find Katniss already gone. He tries not to feel discouraged. It looks to be late morning and Katniss is an early riser. She probably just wanted to get on about her day without disturbing him. She's probably hunting. Katniss likes to hunt in the mornings.
He walks downstairs and makes himself a cup of coffee. He's just pouring cream into his cup when he hears it. He would recognize that voice anywhere. Katniss is singing, her high, sweet voice coming from somewhere outside the house.
Peeta follows the sound of her voice to their backyard where he finds that Katniss is taking down laundry from the clothesline. The wind catches her dark, unbound hair and blows it around her face. She's singing a simple children's song with her achingly beautiful voice and, just like with her father, a group of mockingjays has stopped to listen. Three or four of them are perched on a fence nearby, looking at Katniss with fascination.
Katniss rarely sings. Peeta always considers it a special day when he gets to hear her music.
A cotton sheet catches in the wind and blows in Peeta's direction. He rushes to grab it and Katniss gets to it at about the same time. Their hands touch and a shiver runs through Peeta. Katniss looks at him, somehow shy and knowing at the same time. He remembers what they'd said the night before.
You love me. Real or not real?
Real.
He smiles at Katniss and leans down for a kiss. Behind them, the mockingjays coo softly.
