Mike lost. And he lost bad. Their clients even apologized to him for the loss. That didn’t help, just made him feel like shit even more. The opposing council had done an amazing job of finding every piece of dirt of each member of his class and he made his case tumble like a house of cards.
After the jury ruled, Mike walked out of the courthouse. He made his way to his car fast, not wanting to face any of his clients. He wasn’t up to it for now. When his driver asked where to, he said home. He didn’t have the strength to face everyone at the office. He just wanted to crawl into bed and sleep for a few days.
A few weeks ago, he and Harvey had moved in together, buying a condo together. Half of their boxes were still unpacked. The unpacking was taking so damn long! But it was worth it because every morning, Mike had the pleasure to wake up in Harvey’s arms. Something that felt like a dream somehow, that often he had to remind himself that it wasn’t a dream.
He made his way into the empty condo. He changed into his pajamas and slipped under the covers in the bed. There was no way he was moving from this spot for the next few days, managing partner or not. He tried to close his eyes, maybe nap for a bit but he couldn’t sleep. He was re-running the whole trial in his head. His photographic memory was now a curse more than a blessing.
Some time later, as the sun was starting to go down, he heard the door of the condo open and then close. A second later Harvey was calling his name. Mike could hear the concern in his voice but didn’t have the strength to answer properly. He just groaned loudly, hoping it would give Harvey an indication of his whereabout. He heard the footsteps get closer, but not loud. Harvey had probably taken off his shoes. Then the bed moved as Harvey sat on the bed. His hand slipped under the covers to stroke Mike’s hair.
“Are you alright puppy?”
“Of course I’m not. I lost.”
“Yeah… That was bad.”
Mike turned and slipped his head from under the covers to face Harvey who had a compassionate smile on his face:
“Thanks arsehole!”
“Mike… I mean it happens to every lawyer.”
“It doesn’t happen to you.”
“Yes it does. And I hate it. That’s why I don’t go to trial when I can avoid it.”
Harvey stroked his cheek, smiling gently. It made Mike felt like shit even more for some reason. He just curled against Harvey, pressing his cheek against the expensive fabric of his suit, taking a smell of the rich cologne mixed with the smell that was uniquely Harvey. They stayed like that, with Harvey petting his hair silently for quite some time.
“I suppose I should cancel our reservation for dinner,” commented Harvey after some time.
“I don’t want to go out. Not tonight.”
“Want to order pizza? We can get the cheese in the crust.”
When half an hour later, they found themselves eating pizza on their bed, Harvey not saying anything about crusts in bed for once, wearing a full three-piece navy-blue suit that clashed with the whole setting.
“You don’t have to be so nice to me,” commented Mike between two bites.
“You lost a case. I would be really a jackass if I didn’t try to comfort you.”
“Yeah but eating in bed… The Harvey Specter I know would have a heart attack. What did you do to my boyfriend?”
Harvey didn’t answer immediately. He finished the slice of pizza he was holding before whipping his hands on some paper towels. He then stared at Mike with a soft smile, his Specter smile, the one that put wrinkles in the corner of his eyes and made his eyes shine. The smile that would make Mike weak in the knees.
“You know I love you puppy? I even allow you to eat in our bed.”
“Which is a big thing for you, knowing how freakish you can be about those things.”
“Mike… Don’t interrupt me.”
Mike nodded, seeing that Harvey had his serious face on. He nodded and gestured him to continue. He knew this was going somewhere apparently.
“You changed my life when you walked into that hotel room and dropped that briefcase full of weed. And I am glad that you weren’t a coward and kissed me that Friday night 2 and half years ago. It’s now my turn to stop being a coward.”
Mike’s eyes widened when he saw Harvey put his hand in the inner pocket of his suit jacket. He knew where this was going now. And when he saw the small velvet box, it was confirmed. He stared at Harvey, wide eyed.
“I planned asking you before dessert, getting on one knee, at that restaurant you like but actually this is better.”
He watched Harvey open the box and found himself starring at a platinum ring with a small discreet diamond. Well it looked like a diamond and probably was an expensive one knowing Harvey.
“Michael James Ross, will you marry me?”
He stared at the ring then at Harvey who was looking at him, expecting an answer with a look of hope in his eyes. Mike felt tears of joy come up in his eyes before a managed to get out a strangled:
“Yes… Yes I will.”
He let Harvey take his left hand and slip carefully the ring on his finger before kissing his hand. Mike leaned to kiss Harvey softly, whispering ‘I love you’ between two soft kisses. Then Mike pulled away and asked, somehow concerned:
“You told me you wanted to wait before going steady. After the whole Donna thing, you wanted us to be a sure thing.”
“Mike… When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
