Work Text:

“Dazai still has not returned?” He asked over the phone, his voice slightly shaking. Chuuya had been anxious when he saw that Mori had been calling him. More often than not, it was a complaint or an order for a new mission. Occasionally it was to get Dazai to come into work. This time it was different. Anyone with two eyeballs could see that Mori cared for Dazai. While it may not be conventional, how a father would love a son, it was still their own fucked up was of affection. Therefore when Mori spoke, voice full of anger that Chuuya never thought he would hear, the young red head was on high alert.

“Yes. I tried to keep him from leaving headquarters but he is rather bullish when he actually wants to do something. I know where he would be though. You will also need to bring a clean-up crew with you. Mimic will have been taken out and you must quickly clear it.

There was another thing. Mimic. Chuuya had been hearing about it through the grapevine. His own unit did not have any business with them, but he knew that Dazai did. He also knew that they were powerful ability users, powerful warriors. Dazai may be smart but he was not strong. He was probably one of the weakest members of the Port Mafia physically wise.

Now, as much as he hated to admit it, Chuuya was worried. Dazai was like a fluttering hummingbird just waiting for its wings to be clipped. If he hadn’t been smart enough or fast enough, Dazai would have died. Chuuya’s stomach dropped as he called out to his men. He got the coordinates on his phone and plugged them into his phone which he then plugged into his car. Driving there, Chuuya knew he broke quite a few laws; but he did not care.

Mimic had been hiding out DEEP in the woods in some old mansion outside of town. It must have been beautiful in its hay-day, but now completely run down. Luckily he got there before his men, therefore able to assess the situation before, just in case something went wrong. Chuuya parked and walked in, making sure to stay as quiet as possible. Right away he saw the carnage of what happened. Every man he passed had been shot dead. Whoever had come in here, knowing it was not Dazai that had done it all, was a devil with a gun. Further and further Chuuya went. At one point as he ascended a grand stair case, he thought that no one was alive in there; whether that meant any survivors rushed off or not he did not know.

Well, he would soon find out. The faintest noise could be heard down the hall from where he was standing. Chuuya actually used his ability to keep himself off the ground a bit as he walked, making double sure not to make noise. What he found was something that flipped his world upside down.

While he and Dazai were not particularly close, Chuuya still cared deeply for him. If he were being honest, Dazai was the closest thing to a brother he had.

And there Dazai was. He was lying on the ground. Probably up to almost a hundred men were lying in the room, dead as well. Two men; one that Dazai was with and the other off to the side, were shot dead. Yet the one that Dazai was lying next to was special. Perhaps lying next to was not the correct word. No. Dazai was curled up against him, like he was trying to go someplace that no living person could. He was speaking to the dead man. With one hand resting upon the man’s bloodied chest, Dazai pressed his own face against the dead man’s; tears dripping from his brown eyes which was another thing Chuuya never thought he would see.

Upon closer inspection, Chuuya realized that the man Dazai was holding like glass was Oda Sakunosuke. He was just a low ranking member, perhaps the lowest in the Mafia. He apparently had taken a vow not to kill though he was rumored to have perfect gun skills. Had he killed all of these men in one last charge? Then there was another question. What was Dazai doing here with that man? Did he care for him so much to curl up to the dead? And how long had it been. The stink of death was just starting to permeate around the room. But Dazai did not mind. No he did not mind.

The brunette continued to whisper things to the dead man with those alien tears hitting skin that would never feel warmth again.

“You can’t do this to me.” Dazai said. Chuuya made sure to stay hidden. This was a moment not for him to intrude on though he could not look away. “You can’t leave me here. I can’t do this without you.” His soft words were punctuated by quiet sobs. It was obvious that Dazai rarely, if ever, cried. The sound of the sobs sounded more like he did not know how to. “For the first time… For the first time I actually wanted to live.”

Those few words caused Chuuya to freeze. This man, Oda Sakunosuke, had that much of an impact on Dazai.

“Not survive.” Another sob. “Not exist.” Chuuya felt the tell-tale sign of a lump in his throat. Why was this making him upset? Why? He hated to realize that the reason was jealousy. Plain and simple. For so long Dazai had been so distant, yet this man was able to shatter those diamond strong walls and break Dazai so irrefutably when he past. “I wanted to live.” Chuuya almost had to turn away when Dazai pushed himself up some to press a chaste kiss upon lips that would never kiss back; as much as Dazai surely wanted them to.

“Please please please please please. Please god don’t take him away from me.” Dazai moved so he was lying on top of the corpse now. Surely the entire front of his body would be covered in blood, but he did not care. Chuuya knew he did not care.

This time Chuuya did feel a tear fall from his eye, unable to stop it in time, when Dazai pressed another kiss to Oda Sakunosuke’s mouth. All the while the crystalline like water droplets from Dazai’s own eyes fell to that cold skin.

In that moment Chuuya knew this was the end. It was the end of the Dazai he knew. He knew that Dazai was not coming back to the mafia for hew knew that Mori was behind this.

Dazai would not be coming back when half of his heart would soon be six feet under.
