She could imagine she was laying her head in Chu Wanning’s warm lap, or pretend she was brushing Chu Wanning’s hair after a bath together. Deny, deny, deny everything so she wouldn't cry without anyone to wipe her tears and pat her back.
A moment of carelessness is all it takes for them to realise what being a woman during war meant: complete loss. From Chu Wanning, the only virtue she held. From Mo Ran, the pride she had built on fragile sticks.
