Summary
Wei Wuxian dies at twenty-two and doesn’t come back. Lan Wangji dies in an “unfortunate accident” in a temple in Yunping at thirty-seven. The world moves on.
Thousands of years later, Wei Ying and Lan Zhan have a senior thesis in cultivation to co-write on the Yiling Patriarch. It doesn’t go exactly how they were expecting.

“I still do not understand why you were able to read the journal in the first place,” Lan Zhan says.Wei Ying grins. “You’ll laugh,” he says. He won’t, of course. Lan Zhan doesn’t laugh. But maybe he can swing a smile. “It’s because of the name thing. He wrote his name into the scrambling talisman. So it says that no one can undo the lock but Wei Ying.” He hooks a thumb at himself.
Everyone’s always said his name is unlucky. This is the first time it’s worked out in his favor. It’s not a coincidence either; apparently his mother thought it would be funny. Mrs. Yu had told him that with a curl in her lip, as if it didn’t make him wish he knew his parents even more.

If it were a regular day, Lan Zhan would have let him become that petulant and then kissed his pout off his lips until Wei Ying turned as red as the chilli oil which they stored just for him in the kitchens. Then, he would remind him, Wei Ying, you refused to come to bed until it was chou shi. If you do not sleep the required time, your health will suffer. If I wake you early, I will not be able to hold my husband for the prescribed hours, and then my own health will suffer, following which Wei Ying would splutter and blush brighter still.
Alternatively: a fortnight in the life of Yiling Laozu, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, Scourge of Jianghu, Corrupter of Children, Husband of Lan Wangji, as he lives out his roles as teacher, friend, brother, father, spouse.

Lan Wangji, generally speaking, did not make note of people. Of course there were exceptions, once faced with special kindness or distaste, but most often others left an imprint so light that it would fade from his mind in only a few days, if not minutes.
He didn’t feel right in his skin for the rest of the day after meeting Wei Wuxian.
