some of the funniest fucking prose i've ever read in my life and also just incredibly healing and fills the heart from the premise alone. i need more of pre-timeskip team 7 and kakairu bonding like crack
if canon remembered how much iruka loved his students and that they loved him right back... shit would have gone down very differently. sasuke is still sasuke but undeniably included in the whole dynamic is also incredibly important. just great all around.

“It’s my birthday.”
The chūnin’s eyes widened. He looked out over the graveyard. Tenzō could see the incredulous thought as it formed: “And you’re spending it here?”
It never came to fruition; the man’s features slackened and his lips pressed together tight. When he turned back around, Tenzō fantasized that he could see more understanding than pity in the man’s gaze.
The question he actually asked was soft, and not incredulous at all. “Do you want to be alone?”
Tenzō had never been asked that question before. His exhausted brain churned sluggishly, searching for an honest answer. He wasn’t very surprised when he found it. “Not really.”

Kakashi smiled, twirling the band around his forefinger like a kunai. “Perjury and willful concealment.”
Iruka huffed and shook his head, lips thinning in a way that made Kakashi think he was holding back a grin. “You know, if I’d realized you had such a thing for long hair, I would have started wearing mine down years ago.”
Kakashi’s thumb caught the hair band, halting its revolution.
“Years?”

Iruka searches for a way around it, and finds himself a target. An alpha out of the village frequently, who doesn't seem interested in courting, but who needs to so the Council will leave him alone.
There are worse ways to start a love story.
