But it had survived even when its owner's mind hadn't; it had laid at the bottom of his big pile of fans or whatever, to be picked up by what was left of Shen Qingqiu after his qi deviation.
There were all kinds of mundane yet important things discussed at the meeting, that he had dutifully filed away in his mind, but he kept lingering on the same thought:

Louis rolls his eyes. He tries to seem unaffected, but he knows his breathing is still harsh. “Don’t bother me again. I’ll have you thrown out.”
Lestat leans into his space, casual in his intrusion. “Will you?”
Louis can’t actually throw out Lestat, not for anything he’s done so far. If Tom knew he was threatening to boot a rich customer over this, he’d shout himself hoarse. But Lestat doesn’t know that. Probably.
“Yes. I can and I will.”
Lestat’s hand wraps around Louis’ left wrist, and his grip is firm, proprietary. Louis tries to pull away, but he can’t budge Lestat’s hand. He feels panic start to creep in, insidious.
“Ah, ah, ah, it’s alright, chéri, I won’t hurt you.”
