Even without the napkin, it would have been clear that Jack had been the one to pack the cooler bag. Not an inch of wasted space, everything nested together like some kind of food-based, three-dimensional Tetris: a bag of chips; three granola bars, Robby's preferred brand and flavour; a black and white cookie in a ziplock baggie; two cans of sparkling water; a small tupperware container; a thick, square package of something wrapped tight in red waxed paper. On top of everything was a spork, a carefully folded paper napkin, and a wet wipe sachet; the whole sat on top of a heavy-duty reusable ice pack.
But the napkin took away any lingering doubt. On it, Jack had jotted a note in his usual blocky print.
Not sure if I got the salad anywhere close to what your grandma used to make, but mine would have said that God loves a trier. Then again, she did vote for Nixon, and more than once, so she said a lot of shit. Enjoy.
Here the nib of the pen seemed to have dug into the napkin for a moment before Jack had continued: I don't want to get a call as your emergency contact, but I'll pick up the phone for you any time.

He can’t remember the protocols he used, the approaches they tried, only the blood that pooled around his feet, staining his shoes, and Robby hasn’t the first idea that he’s crying through any of it until Biff clumsily sits up and reaches up to lick at his face. It startles a wet breath of laughter from him, and he scritches Biff behind one ear. Isn’t that the way of it, he thinks desperately. Loss and laughter, grief and trust, a scalpel wielded against giving flesh and the lightest touch of a human hand muddled together. In a kennel. With a dog.

When he boards the elevator he’s upset. By the time he leaves the elevator he’s angry, each reverberation of his feet hitting asphalt felt in the remaining bones and surgical grade titanium in his right leg, all the way up to his hip. It takes him less than sixty seconds to walk from the parking deck to the ambulance bay. Ten feet from the entrance, he sees Robby walk through the first set of doors, past Ahmad, and then through the second set of doors. His pulse roars in his ears, his heart pounding in his chest. For the first time in years, Jack Abbot feels something approximating rage, an emotion he has long assumed to be medicated out of him.
His hands furl into fists.

Summary
