For a brief moment, Elliot allowed himself a selfish feeling of hope. He could hope that maybe, just maybe, he had somehow escaped this realm. Maybe he had made it back home. And, for a fleeting moment, he let himself hold onto that hope as tight as he could.
That was until he spotted the building further behind, walls caved in and engulfed in flames. It was Builder Brothers’ Pizza. It was his pizzeria. The one he worked away in every single day of his goddamn life before he came here. It was practically his second home.

Then his head snapped up a second before he registered the screaming. He pulled his mask back down and the bagel fell out of his hand and tumbled down, possibly hitting someone upon it’s descent.
The sky turned and darkened, a figure he could barely make out was hovering in the air, a cape flowing behind them. Looming blackness reached the ground and started spreading. Peter shot a web and propelled himself up the building, and began to crawl to the very top to get a better view. His heart was pounding in a way that it hadn’t in a long time. This was new. Bad new.
Tendrils squirmed and snaked their ways across the sidewalks and the road. Peter watched as one of them reached a mother and her child. Then suddenly they were gone. A shadow left in their wake.
“What the hell?”

He thinks of someone else who’d kept her in his sight at all times, that almost-emptiness yawning deep and dark where Peter’s senses should’ve given him anything, if only as a starting point. “Maybe a little safer than some other people who used to be associated with me.”
Her expression doesn't change. The air shifts anyway, just a little. Enough. “Nobody knows who you are.”
“No,” he says, just as cautious, just as heavy. “Not anymore.”
