Being in an alternate universe was like standing in a grid-patterned mat, having all these lines intersecting each other in a tangential pattern or staying close but never crossing each other in a parallel fashion. Lucas was unsure what each of the intersections meant in this world, whether he was allowed to step on one of them and see what it unraveled.
