Summary
Three weeks after Eddie leaves for Texas, Buck gets a call in the middle of the night from a trauma center in El Paso. Eddie was in a serious car accident and has been rushed into surgery for a skull fracture. Buck rushes to Texas, finding that things are even messier than he imagined, and that's before Eddie wakes up and confesses that he's not sure it was actually an accident. That he might have done it on purpose. So Buck does what his parents never did for him: he steps in, all the way, and helps put his little family back together.

Summary
After the fight in the grocery store, Buck feels like he's causing too much damage so he drops the lawsuit and leaves LA, joining a hotshot wildland firefighter crew out of Montana. He's gone for six months until he gets a call from Chris that something is wrong with Eddie, causing him to race back home only to find a very confused Eddie instead of a hurt or depressed Eddie. Eddie talks him into coming inside for a beer and after that Buck can't bring himself to leave the Diaz boys behind again. But that doesn't mean he's ready to talk to anyone else yet. So they just don't tell anyone else Buck is back. For over two years. Even when they start dating.
Three years after he left LA and the 118, there's a pileup on the 210 in La Tuna Canyon Park and a wildfire racing towards all the crews scrambling desperately to get everyone out in time, including the 118. Buck's crew is in the right place at the right time, and they don't hesitate to come help.

Eddie has to take a swig of his free beer to collect himself.

Buck freezes.
He turns, and there’s Diaz—Dr. Arrogant Himself—striding toward them in dark blue scrubs, exuding confidence like he owns the place.
“Why are you here?” Buck blurts out before he can stop himself.
Diaz doesn’t even glance at him. “Where’s the patient?” he repeats, addressing Bobby instead.
Sure, Eddie Diaz is a surgeon. Fine. But this is their domain—firefighters saving lives in impossible situations—and Buck can’t shake the feeling that Diaz doesn’t trust them to handle it. The arrogance practically radiates off him, rubbing Buck raw with every calm, clipped instruction.

Ryan's spent his entire career being a substitute teacher, he's lived in almost every county in California if only for a few weeks. When the teacher he's subbing for resigns, the Dean asks him if he would like the permanent position and gives Ryan three weeks to think about it, in those three weeks he meets Shane.
Ryan sat in the teachers lounge with Steven eating lunch a few days later. “So, have you made your decision yet?” He asked.“Well, I’m not completely sure. But,” At that moment Shane walked into the room and over to the fridge to retrieve his lunch. “I’m currently leaning towards staying.” He tells Steven his eyes still locked on Shane.
Steven turns around in his chair to see what Ryan was looking at so intently. Spying Shane at the fridge his eyes started to sparkle. “Oh, really now?” He raised his eyebrows up and down suggestively.

Shane’s fingers curled tighter so he would stop shaking. Ryan pulled away, drew back slowly, and pushed Shane’s hands back, off his hips gently. “Baaaad idea,” he mumbled, licking his lips and shutting his eyes as he extricated himself. “This is a bad idea.”
Ryan didn’t get it, and Shane was left behind in a moment, trying to figure out in a drunken stupor, how best to tell Ryan that those were the ideas Shane liked the most.

It happened very quickly, and yet not very quickly at all. Shane was paralyzed as the blade part of Ryan’s katana swiped up when he swung it thoughtlessly—drunkenly—and Shane remembered blinking like the scene would change if he opened his eyes again, but the man was still writhing around on the ground with a stripe of glistening red on his throat and Ryan was staring down at him like he’d never seen anything so horrific or gripping.
They both stared numbly, intently, until the man’s erratic choking spasms on the cement became a haunting stillness in a pool of his own blood.
“Whoops,” Ryan said, the low register of his voice seeming like a shout to Shane in the silence of the night and of the now dead man laying at their feet.
--On Halloween night, Ryan accidentally kills someone, and Shane has seen too many movies to do anything sensible about it.
