Because they had decided something together, Satoru had thought: to prolong the inevitable until it could no longer be prolonged. He’d expected to be the one to eventually put an end to it, when his systems truly began to fail. A glorious one last stand.
But his companion had surprised him with an invitation instead. Satoru pursued their voice, which sprawled comfortably across a pentatonic scale, and hoped, even though he didn’t have the ability to hope, that they had found a way to close the distance between them without ending it all.
After the apocalypse, a decades-long chase comes to an end.
