My name is Wren Harris. I am thirty-seven years old. I graduated from Northwest Nazarene University, class of ‘99, and, at the time of writing this, I reside in the suburbs of Portland. I had a steady job, a family I loved dearly, and a life so predictable I believed it would last eternally. The past few months have passed in a blur, but looking back now, the events that led me here have become increasingly easy to pinpoint. And so I’ll begin there. Allow me to tell you exactly where it all went wrong.

“Emery Rivera,” he told him. “My name is Emery Rivera.”
“Rivera,” the man repeated, his words slow and deliberate. “Amari Taymiyyah. Wannabe musician.”
“A wannabe musician talking to a wannabe magician,” he laughed, twirling a strand of hair with his index finger. “Guess we can both be wannabes together.”
When Emery Rivera was twenty-one, he had dreams of being the greatest magician in the world. Now, at thirty-three, he's given up on those dreams in favour of being an ordinary doctor working a dead-end hospital job in New York.
