Summary
“It’s a letter to the Offices of State’s public communications box,” Rhodin said. “With an anecdote about the annual stipend.”
“Is it?” Cliopher said. They got plenty of those letters, of course; usually reading and responding to them was the first-year secretaries’ job. “And it made its way to you?”
“Well,” Rhodin said blithely, “it claims to be from Fitzroy Angursell, you see.”
-
In which Cliopher misses his Radiancy, distracts himself by starting a pseudonymous correspondence with Fitzroy Angursell, and develops an entirely academic and rational interest in determining which member of the Red Company is the friend that Fitzroy won’t stop talking about.

Bookmarker's Notes
Cliopher could do this. He could. “You should ask me what I was jealous of,” he whispered.
Fitzroy’s eyes opened fully, at that. “What were you jealous of, Kip?” he murmured. He reached out a hand and then hesitated, leaving it hanging in the air, an offering.
Cliopher took it. He let the warmth of it, the smoothness, the new harp calluses steady his courage. “I wanted to be the person you missed most,” he confessed. His voice was soft in his own ears, but the woods were quiet with the mid-day heat, and the bees were distant and muffled, not the droning forces that they had once been in their heyday, and he knew Fitzroy could still hear him. “The person that knew you best. The one you wanted by your side.”
“If only we were all only desperately jealous for things that were ours for the claiming,” Fitzroy murmured.

Summary
Jullanar didn’t realize anything was wrong until the newspaper boy yelped in panic, until she was turning back to see the paper Fitzroy was holding on fire, a conflagration held in one hand, his eyes liquid gold with magic and his voice perfectly empty when he said, “No. That can’t be right. There’s been a mistake.”
-

Summary
Jean does not know when the mark shows up for certain. What he knows is that during his freshman year in between the first horrible night and the next, the words JEAN MOREAU? JEREMY KNOX. show up on the back of his neck where only the others could see. Thirty minutes later, everyone knew.
“Yes?” Jean Moreau’s voice is hoarse, tinny through the phone, and his accent shortens the reply by a half-syllable, but it doesn’t matter. Because he is an idiot, Jeremy’s heart swoops into his stomach. Again. Like every other time he hears the word. He takes an embarrassingly long moment to collect himself, breathing out through his nose and ignoring the phantom tingling on the inside of his left thigh. It’s not happening.
__Or: the first words your soulmate ever says to you are inked somewhere on your body, if you're lucky. Against sense, this does not make things easier for Jean Moreau and Jeremy Knox.
