Chris has dealt with a lot of strange occurrences in his life. He's survived even more bizarre situations by quick thinking ingenuity and pure dumb luck. He's fought nightmares beyond imagination, and felt pain worse than death itself. He’s known great joy and great loss as both are often companions standing hand-in-hand in his life. He's faced the impossible time and time again while still managing to come out on top. All of that felt like a fading dream compared to what he was faced with right this very moment.
For Chris found himself, not in his makeshift office reading over the end reports of a successful mission submitted by the Hound Wolf Squad, but standing outside on the steps of a very familiar porch staring at a very familiar door.
Chris didn't have the time to ponder this bizarre situation for long when the door in front of him opened just a crack. Through the darkened entryway, a pair of red puffy eyes stared at him suspiciously.
“Can I help you?” His younger self attempted to be firm but there was a warble to his words that scratched at the raw emotion he was barely holding back.

His fucking suspenders. Slightly frayed, but otherwise none the worse for wear, wrapped around one of the branches and keeping Usopp from plummeting into the hellfire below.
Usopp blinks, slowly. “Damn.” His mouth is full of blood. It’s a good thing that no one’s around to hear him gurgle like a loser on it. “Good find, Nami.”

"And Chopper is just going to jump right after him, just wait for it. They never learn, I swear, it's a wonder we ever get anything done."
Her voice sounded exasperated, and her eyes slid to him expectantly, perhaps waiting for him to join in on the complaining, as he had done many times before; but Usopp just laughed earnestly, and leaned on the railing.
"I missed you, Nami", he said absently, and Nami shot him a look before saying, "Well, you wouldn't have needed to miss me if you hadn't left."
(or: in which Usopp apologizes too much, Nami fails to hide her feelings, and foundations shaken start to be rebuilt.)
