Mike can only shake his head. Tears slip down his cheeks as his lips wobble helplessly. “I’m not.”
Will watches him for a moment before speaking again.
“Talk to me.” His voice is still breathy and weak, the words almost getting lost between shallow breaths. “I love talking to you.”
Mike lets out a laugh through his tears. “I love talking to you too,” he says, wiping uselessly at his face. “I love talking to you more than anyone else.”

Mike watched him skip up towards the rest of their friends, slinging his arms around Lucas' and Max's shoulders. The music became impossibly louder as soon as the door opened, smacking against Mike's chest with a startle. In the blink of an eye, he watched his friends dissolve into the crowd like a cube of sugar in hot tea.
He ran through a brief list of goals before he stepped over the threshold of the house.
