Matthias had a practically orgasmic reaction to Mihaly’s blood, but the substance was quite different when passed between vampires. There it seemed only a pale imitation of human blood, thin and lifeless. Dirty in the most literal sense of the word, as if mud flowed through their veins. The cause was their shared lack of a soul, Mihaly suspected; a tempting ideal of freedom for those with something left to trade, but not to those who had already given theirs up. Still, it was more appealing than animals, who had never had one at all. And Vlad only rarely tasted human blood anyway.

Sauron had kept his word. That truth stung anew each time Celebrimbor dwelt upon it. It did not matter that Sauron was most likely doing it spitefully and certainly treated Celebrimbor like a cross between a pet and a lover. Sauron had not, strictly speaking, hurt him. He had many other aversives that could remind Celebrimbor of his place.

Bearded infants, beardless little ancients—the juxtaposition never failed to startle. But both Arwen and Dís of the Lonely Mountain were weaned on diplomacy. They accommodated the strangeness of others.
