"He didn’t want Ilya to know that he had driven all night. He would be worried. But there hadn’t really been another option. Shane had been too tense to sleep, too tense to breathe properly. Seeing Ilya would help him relax. He was always good at giving Shane what he needed. He would tease him first, of course.

    “Fucking relax, Hollander.”

But he would. Relax. As soon as he had Ilya in his arms. His heart would stop hammering, his bones would stop vibrating, the rush in his ears would quiet. He knew it. He just needed to see him. Because he was fine. Ilya was fine.

Ilya almost died. Ilya almost -"

“Ilya,” Shane whispers. “Ilya, baby, can you open your eyes?”

He’s met with silence, and the frantic tremor of his heart turns into an earthquake. The ice beneath him seeps into his veins and freezes his blood. Panic claws at his chest, scaling his ribcage like a ladder and lodging in his throat. He can barely breathe around the terror.

“Ilya, you need to open your eyes. You need to look at me.”

    Summary

LeClaire’s hand is still on his shoulder, and Ilya knows that it doesn’t look like anything. A coach speaking to one of his players. LeClaire’s heat seeps through his suit jacket, and his breath is a warm, damp wash of air against Ilya’s ear.

“They’ve finished up with the awards,” he murmurs. “You look like you’re ready to get out of here.”

Ilya nods tightly and sets his drink down on the table.

    OR:

Gregori Rozanov was bad in many ways, but Coach LeClaire might have him beat.

Shane Hollander has something to say about that. It turns out a lot of people do.
