Summary
Nathaniel watches him with a sharpness that betrays his casual slouch, his back resting on the arm of the couch. His legs are stretched out in front of him, covered by a thick quilt. There’s a movie playing on the large television but Nathaniel doesn’t seem interested in it at all.
This is the first time Andrew’s met the man. All of his prior correspondence—his responsibilities, his hours, his pay—has been with his enigmatic and slightly irritating uncle and he’d be lying if said he wasn’t looking forward to today. By Stuart’s words, Nathaniel is a caustic traumatized asshole with a tongue sharp enough to cut right to bone.
What Andrew has seen so far doesn’t necessarily contradict that, but there has to be more to Nathaniel. Andrew sees himself, ten years and hundreds of hours spent in his therapist’s office ago.
Andrew hands off his medication instead of asking what it is Nathaniel sees in him.
