He'd been napping on a threadbare checkered quilt, head pillowed on his arms while he basked in the sun like their old barn cat. He didn't open his eyes even when the footsteps stopped just behind him, too relaxed and comfortable to bother. 'You were gone a long time.'
'Off pickin' daisies.'
Charles snorted. 'I'm sure.'"
