They had driven past the village on their way to the farm. It lay roughly seven miles to the east, nestled comfortably in a valley surrounded by gently sloping hills and far reaching grassland. Many of its trees stood naked, the rest dearly holding on to their yellowed leaves. The houses were squatting amongst them, built wide and low, mostly made of sturdy brick. According to Mr. Flint, there were around 80 inhabitants.
The atmosphere was decidedly eerie. It was early afternoon, but there were no children running around, no people chatting, the only sign of life was a dog barking away in one of the yards.
